Most people try to get rid of unwanted mice in their homes, but students at Union Intermediate School are creating and building homes for mice. After reading the Beverly Cleary books, The Mouse and the Motorcycle and Runaway Ralph, students were assigned the task to design and create a house for Ralph, the mouse, to live in. The students also had to write a letter persuading Ralph to live in their house and they had to present their project to the class.
“I have never seen such beautiful projects,” said Angelia Bass, fourth-grade teacher at UIS. “I was so excited at how parents really got involved in the project as a whole. Just when we thought that the last project was the best one that we had ever seen, in came another one just as good.”
Students and parents have really spent some time on these projects and have learned a lot. They used their imaginations and built all kinds of features that a mouse would like to enjoy. There were escape passage ways to hide from cats, lighted rooms, garage space for the motorcycle, and even a working doorbell. Homes were built out of everything from cardboard, wood, and Pexiglas. Children displayed their houses in the media center and were allowed to view each other’s work. A fun time was had by all.
