Midway’s JV girls ended a three-game week with a scorching of visiting Wallace-Rose Hill, moving their conference record to 2-0 with the 45-10 win.
The Raiders won two of the three games of the week, falling only to non-conference competitor Richlands in a low-scoring 21-18 game.
Coach Allan McLamb praised his girls for a hard-fought week of games, noting that even in the Richlands game, the young Raiders gave it their all.
“In the Richlands game, we couldn’t find the basket. We actually had the lead and let it slip away, but you have those nights when you can’t buy a bucket. We’ll learn from it,” McLamb said.
Wallace game
In the Thursday afternoon game with the Lady ‘Dogs, it was all Midway. Coming off the Richlands loss, the girls came out hot and played that way throughout.
“They just played good basketball,” McLamb stressed. We had a few girls out, some moved up to varsity, and the girls we had fought through the adversity and played an outstanding game.”
The Raiders, he said, hit the boards hard, showed strong defense and turned that defense into made buckets in transition.
Eight of the team’s nine players scored in the game.
Leading the way for the JV was Savannah Spell with 11 and Kelsey Pondo with 11. Also scoring was Ashton Warren, 8; Taylor Faircloth, 6; Emily Hairr, 4; Emily Williams, 2; Megan Smith, 2; and Haley Sessoms, 1.
Richlands
In the non-conference game, the Raiders lost an early lead and eventually the game. McLamb said the team basically got lazy in the third quarter, but lost the game in the fourth when they allowed Richlands to make baskets while they couldn’t find a shot.
But he praised the play of Kelsey Pondo who, he said had 9 rebounds and 11 points. “This is her first year playing basketball. She did a great job.”
Also scoring was Brianna Butler, who had 4 points; Spell with 4; Megan Smith with 4; Chakeera Rhodes, 2; Taylor Faircloth, 2; Warren, 1; and Williams, 1.
Trask
In the opening game of the week, Midway’s JV took the win 44-33. McLamb said it was a good floor game with the team running their game the best he’d seen all season.
He praised the play of Emily Williams and Emily Hairr, both who, he said stepped up big from the team.
Brianna Butler had a double-double on the night, and again eight of the team’s nine players scored.
Leading the way was Butler with 15 points and 12 rebounds; Faircloth, 7 ; Rhodes, 6; Williams, 6; Pondo, 5; Haley Sessoms, 2; Megan Sessoms, 2; and Emily Hairr, 1.
