In December, South River Electric Membership Corporation’s foundation, the Community Assistance Corporation, awarded $54,736.79 in grants through the Operation Round Up program.
For the fourth quarter, the foundation awarded $5,000 grants to the following agencies: Hall’s Fire and Rescue; Special Olympics of Sampson County; and The Child Advocacy Center. Other organizations receiving grants are: Herring Volunteer Fire Department received $5,764.50 and Newton Grove Rescue Squad was awarded $4,515.40.
The Community Assistance Corporation also awarded several educational grants to the following schools: Hobbton Elementary received $6,176; South Harnett Elementary was awarded $9,901.53; Midway Elementary accepted $3,379.36; and Cape Fear High was given $10,000.
South River EMC members continue to help these local agencies and educational institutions, even in tough economic times. Since the Operation Round Up program began in 2009, over $838,615 has been donated to local community agencies and schools.
South River EMC members participate in Operation Round Up by agreeing to have their bill rounded up to the next dollar each month. If their bill is $98.69, the 31¢ remaining will be put into an account managed by the Community Assistance Corporation.
Quarterly, funds are distributed to local service agencies, educational pursuits or to aid families who are experiencing unusually grave times. The next funding opportunity will be in March, applications are due to the Cooperative by February 20.
South River EMC is a locally-owned and operated electric cooperative, which provides electric service to 42,000 homes, farms and businesses in parts of Harnett, Cumberland, Sampson, Johnston and Bladen counties.
