CLINTON — Mr. Gene Tunney Kirby Sr., 73, of 2555 Browns Church Road, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday Dec. 27, 2012.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with pastor Lynn Blackburn officiating.

Born in 1939 in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Kirby was the son of the late Nelson “Buck” Kirby and Corena McClenny Kirby. He was veteran of the U. S. Navy, a former police officer, a radio and TV personality and a retired truck driver. He was the founder of The Singing Kirby’s Gospel Group from 1972-76. He was a member of the Clinton Family Worship Center.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Henrietta B. Kirby; one daughter, Denise K. Warren and husband, Truett of Salemburg; three sons, Gene T. Kirby Jr. and wife, Tammy of Roseboro, Nathan G. Kirby and wife Meredith, of Florida, Dallas B. Kirby and wife, Lisa of Wallace nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at his home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Sampson County Animal Shelter because of his love for animals.
