Lady Crusaders win holiday tourney

The Lady Crusaders of Harrells Christian Academy won both rounds of the East-West Holiday Challenge Tournament, defeating Gaston Day School 53-45 on Friday, and then giving a sound 67-30 thumping to Grace Christian on Saturday in the final round of the tourney.

The Harrells girls improve their record to 5-1 overall, and return to the court for regular season play Thursday in a road game against Wake Christian.

In the Friday game, the Lady Crusaders jumped out to an early 17-10 lead, and while Gaston worked its way back into the game during the second period, matching HCA’s points, with 12 each, the Sampson team went into the half ahead 29-22.

Coming back after the break, Harrells doubled Gaston’s score, with the Crusaders adding 16 more points and forging ahead 45-30. They never looked back, taking the win 53-45.

Daisha Jordan led scoring with 20 points. Also scoring for the HCA girls were Regan Murphy, 10; Anna DeVane, 9; Haylee Parks, 7; Chloe Campbell, 5; and Anna Huff, 2;

The Crusader girls played an even more powerful game Saturday against Grace Christian, coming out hot and maintaining consistent scoring throughout,while holding their opponents.

In the first quarter, Harrells went up 19-5 and even though Grace managed 12 more points in the second period, it didn’t match the intensity of HCA’s girls, who added 19 more to head into the break ahead 38-17.

The Crusaders added another 19 points in the third frame, while Grace could only muster 8..

Murphy led scoring in the second round game with 18 points. Also scoring was Jordan, 16; Campbell, 12; DeVane, 10; Bailey Everette, 5; Margaret Clark, 3; Parks, 2; and Huff, 1.

HCA leading rebounders were Huff with 7 and Campbell with 7.
