A Salemburg man was arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping law enforcement late Friday night.

According to Sampson County Sheriff’s reports, officers arrested David Claxton Beatty, 48, of 107 Evergreen Church St., Salemburg, after an altercation with a woman that reportedly had Beatty “grabbing the victim and refusing to let her leave the residence.

It was not clear from reports if the woman was an acquaintance of Beatty’s or a family member.

What was clear was that officers indicated in reports that Beatty was “intoxicated and combative” when they were trying to make the arrest, so much so that they couldn’t take fingerprints of him.

Beatty was taken to the Sampson County Detention Center and given a $50,000 bond. A trial date of April 3 was set.

Cocaine arrest

On Saturday night, Sampson County Sheriff’s officers pulled over a 2002 Pontiac during a traffic stop on Third Street in Garland only to find the driver in possession of cocaine.

Jamex Dexter Barrett, 46, of 446 Cannady Road, Harrells was charged with driving while intoxicated; possession of drug of a schedule II CS substance (cocaine), a felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Barrett was also charged with driving with an open container and driving after consuming, both misdemeanors.

Barrett was taken to the Sampson County Detention Center and given a bond of $11,500 and a trial date of May 13.
