Two Sampson County residents have found themselves in trouble with law enforcement officers, one after being interviewed about another incident yet discovered with drugs in his possession; the other after a stop by Clinton police.

Clinton police reports, filed Thursday, show that Artis William Smith, 53, of 1839 Turkey Hwy, Clinton was arrested New Year’s Eve and charged with two counts of felony possession with intent to manufacture, sale and deliver a Schedule II controlled substance.

The arrest was made around 11 p.m. Monday on Lisbon Street. Officers seized 4.3 grams of a substance believed to be crack cocaine and nine dosage units of Hydrocodone.

Smith was jailed under a $25,000 bond and his first court appearance is scheduled for Friday.

In an unrelated case, reported by Sampson County sheriff’s authorities, Jalen Mathis, 18, of 194 Trestle Road, Ivanhoe, was taken into custody Dec. 26 after officers discovered marijuana at his residence. The report was filed Thursday, Jan. 3, at the Sheriff’s Department.

The twist in the case was that Mathis was being interviewed as a possible suspect in a breaking and entering case at the time, and when officers were given consent to search his residence they discovered the marijuana — some in two bedrooms and more in a bathroom.

In all 59.05 grams of the illegal substance was seized.

Mathis was charged with felony possession of marijuana and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was jailed under a $25,000 bond.

The breaking and entering case is still under investigation, officers said. No further details were available.
