For Sampson County Parks & Recreation, volunteers are important to their programs. Without parents and members in the community willing to volunteer their time, SCPR’s programs wouldn’t have the coaches to meet their steadily rising amount of participants.
For the month of December, SCPR is highlighting the efforts of Western District coach, Dan Heinz. The staff of Parks & Recreation nominated Heinz because of his outstanding efforts as a coach and volunteer. Heinz coached the Western Shockwave, 13-15 year old volleyball team, for the 2012 volleyball season. He led his team to an undefeated regular season championship title and first place in the End of Season Tournament. Heinz has been a part of Sampson County Parks & Recreation’s list of coaches and volunteers for 12 years and has been a big asset to their programs.
When asked why Heinz volunteers for Sampson County Parks & Recreation, he replied, “I volunteer at the Recreation Department because I enjoy teaching the fundamental of team sports. I was fortunate to have played for some coaches who were great teachers and I count it a privilege to pass along the things that I learned. Both of my daughters, Anna and Allyson, have really enjoyed and have benefited from playing in parks and recreation programs. It gave us a lot of quality father/daughter time that we all cherish.”
He was also asked what his most memorable moment as a volunteer was. He said: “We have won a lot of championships over the past 12 years, but the best moments for me are when you see a kid score their first basket, or get their first hit, or finally get an overhand serve in. The smile on their face is as they say, ‘priceless’.”
Katrina Parker, Western District superintendent, also commented, “Without Dan, I would not have been able to have a team from my district this year. I had a staggering three girls registered to play in the 13-15 age group. I randomly saw Dan at a recreation football game and simply asked, ‘Dan, I need at least 7 more girls to make a team for this age group, is there any way you can help me out?’ Dan looked at me and said, ‘Give me three days and I’ll have you a team and I’ll coach it’. Not even the next day I had girls signing up.”
Sampson County Parks & Recreation would like to thank Dan Heinz for all he has done so far for the department, athletes, and parents.
