Clinton’s varsity girls got another road win Wednesday night, traveling to Croatan and returning with a 59-41 conference victory.

The win moves the Lady Horses to 2-0 in the conference as they prepare to go up against Swansboro in a home game Friday.

Coach Chris Owens said he hopes his girls will continue their powerful play, something that wore down the Cougars Wednesday.

“I’d say the key to our win was our defense,” Owens stressed. “Our full court press gave them a lot of problems from the start, and we just kept applying that intense pressure throughout most of the game.”

The pressure defense created a lot of turnovers that the Clinton girls were able to cash in on early, jumping out to an early 21-6 lead and pouring in 12 more points before the half to take a 33-13 advantage into the break.

Croatan mounted a comeback in the third quarter, capitalizing on Owens’ rotation of players and scoring 19 points. But Clinton wasn’t about to go away either, knocking down 14 more points in the third period to take a commanding 47-32 lead into the final frame.

“When I rotated some players in, they got a couple of easy baskets, but we turned up the heat again and were able to hold them down,” Owens said.

Overall, the coach said, he thought his team played a solid game, something he said they will need to continue as they head into the third conference game of the young season.

Leading Clinton’s scoring against Croatan was Kristin Glaspar with 24 points, followed by Courtney Pearsall and Bianca Owens, both with 11. Also scoring was Lexus Simpson, 7; Tiandra Johnson, 4; and Tamara Murphy, 2.

Clinton returns to their home court Friday for the conference game against Swansboro.

The Wednesday win moves their overall record to 9-3.
