The Lady Spartans played host to the Midway Lady Raiders in a conference match-up on Thursday evening. The Lady Raiders won the game 57-15.

Union jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, but the Lady Raiders would rally, scoring the final 4 points of the quarter to lead 6-5. Midway then opened up the second quarter strong and used an 18-0 scoring run from the end of the first quarter to the two minute mark in the second to build a 20-5 lead. The teams then exchanged baskets in the final two minutes, and the Lady Raiders led 24-7 at halftime.

The Raider girls had a scare in the second quarter, however. When Midway forward Morgan Tew collided with a Union defender, she fell to the floor in agonizing pain while holding her knee. She would not return and there is no update on the junior who scored the Raider’s first 8 points in the contest.

The Lady Spartans couldn’t get anything going offensively in the second half either. Amber Poole and Elizabeth McCullen applied good ball pressure in the back court which led to Union turnovers and Midway lay-ups.

The Raiders would increase their lead to 40-11 after the third quarter.

Midway did what they needed to do in the final frame by taking care of the ball and knocking down jumpers, as they won the game by a whopping 42 points.

McCullen did a great job distributing the basketball for Midway. She finished with a game-high 6 assists. Jennifer Blackmon was a monster on the boards once again as she grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 6 points and 4 assists. Tew scored all 8 of her points in the first half before her injury and was extremely effective early for the Lady Raiders, while Jada Cannady’s scoring ability led her to a game-high 14 points.

Nadua McKenzie led the way for Union with 7 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Lauren Preddy and Eva Long each added 4 points to lead the Lady Spartans.

Coaches for Midway and Union could not be reached for comment on the game.
