A strong fourth-quarter from the visiting James Kenan Tigers gave them the edge, and the win, against Union Thursday afternoon. Final score was 46-31, Tigers.

The JV Spartans had a good first half showing, although their second quarter wasn’t nearly as strong as their first. Union was down by only 2 points after the first quarter, 11-9, and were facing only a 23-14 deficit at the half.

But it was all down hill from there.

Coach Bryant Register said his team didn’t seem to show up after the break.

“Things went a little bad in the second quarter, but we simply didn’t work our offense when we came back from the half. We had a lot of break downs, too, in our defense. It just wasn’t a pretty second half, not at all. But I am proud of our guys effort and the way they competed,” Register said.

He also congratulated James Kenan on a good win. “They are a very athletic team and they played well. It was a hard fought win,” Register acknowledged.

Leading scorers for Union were Christian Boykin, 9 points; Jamar Newkirk, 6; JaVonte Henry, 6; Brendon Johnson, 4; Shyquan Brunson, 3; Devon Henry, 2; and Alex Maxwell, 1.

The loss moves Union’s record to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play. They travel to Pender Tuesday.
