Clinton police are continuing an investigation into a Sunday afternoon shooting that left one man injured and another on the run.

Police Chief Jay Tilley said officers have identified a suspect in the shooting, which occurred on West Boney Street around 3 p.m., and are wrapping up their investigation. An arrest, he noted, is pending.

Officers and EMS workers got the call to respond to West Boney Street mid-afternoon Sunday after the victim, 29-year-old Danny Robert Aycock, of 208 Eliza Lane, made his way to a residence on Boney Street and had someone there call for assistance. He had been shot three times.

Tilley said Aycock and another unidentified suspect got into an argument in the middle of the street after Aycock stopped to talk with the suspect.

Words reportedly turned into an argument and that escalated into the suspect pulling a gun. At that point, Tilley said, the victim turned to run, and when he did the suspect opened fire, hitting Aycock three times, one of them striking him in the leg.

Aycock was taken to Sampson Regional Medical Center and later transferred to another unnamed medical facility for treatment of his injuries.

Sampson Regional went under immediate lock down when they received the call that a shooting suspect was being transported to the hospital, a new protocol followed by the medical center staff.

“On Sunday afternoon the Emergency Room received a gunshot victim from a shooting occurring within Clinton city limits,” an official release from the hospital noted. “Because the suspect had not been apprehended and for the protection of the victim, patients, visitors, and staff, the hospital implemented lock down procedures in accordance with hospital policy. The hospital remained in lock down for approximately one hour and five minutes until security personnel and hospital administration could ensure the safety of hospital occupants.”

Tilley reiterated that an arrest was imminent. “We are in the process of completing our investigation at this time,” the police chief noted. “We expect an arrest soon.”
