The Clinton Homeschool Barracuda Swim Team competed in the state homeschool swimming championship sponsored by North Carolinians for Home Education in Winston Salem on Saturday, Feb. 9. Swimming with a total of seven athletes, the Barracudas achieved many personal best times and brought home medals in four events. The boys’ team, make up of six young men, came in second in the team rankings behind the Raleigh Seahawks.

Team captain, sole female Barracuda, and sole senior, Elizabeth Johnson came in second in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:46.48, squeaking in 45/100ths of a second ahead of the third place swimmer. She also swam the 100 Yard Backstroke, coming in fifth with a time of 1:18.32.

Juniors Joel Bradshaw and Alec Linton placed in the top four of their events. In the 100 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Backstroke, Joel came in fourth with a time of 58.21 in the Freestyle and 1:13.57 in the Backstroke. Alec placed second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:18.18 and a fourth in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 25.64.

Joseph Johnson, a sophomore, took third place with a time of 1:06.19 in the 100 Yard Backstroke and a fourth in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:11.13.

Adam Johnson, an 8th grader, and Eli Bradley and Lee Faison, both 7th graders, all stepped up to compete against their high school competitors. Adam achieved personal best times in both the 50 Yard Freestyle coming in 8th with a time of 30.29 and the 100 Yard Backstroke in 1:17.50 to come in sixth. Eli came in seventh in the 50 Freestyle and sixth in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:04.65. The newest swimmer, Lee, made a personal best time in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 35.34, taking ninth place.

The 200 Yard Medley Relay medaled with a second place win with a time of 2:03.45. Swimmers Joel Bradshaw, Alec Linton, Joseph Johnson, and Eli Bradley took on teams who were older, but still placed.

For a team that is just getting started, the Clinton Homeschool Barracudas have a bright future, organizers said.
