Raider girls get Senior Night win

It was Senior Night for the Midway Lady Raiders Tuesday evening as they played host to the Lady Spartans from Union. The Lady Raiders sent their five seniors out in style with a 30-point win, 63-33.

The five seniors started for the Lady Raiders. Tess Williams, Jada Cannady, Kaitlyn Jackson, Elizabeth McCullen, and Jennifer Blackmon all played their final home game on Tuesday.

Cannady and Jackson were on fire early, as they connected from long range on numerous occasions, and helped the Lady Raiders outscore the Lady Spartans by seven in the first quarter, 15-8. In the second, more Lady Raiders became involved in the offense, and this helped Midway double up on Union at halftime, 32-16.

Offense continued to produce in the second half, as sophomore Amber Poole ran the floor well on three separate occasions for easy layups, while Jackson and Cannady continued to connect from the floor. Blackmon was all over the glass with yet another double digit rebound total, and point guard Elizabeth McCullen dished out assist after assist to her teammates. In Tess Williams’ final home game, she continued to do the things she has always done to help the team, fight for rebounds, and knock down open shots.

Nadua McKinze played well for the Spartans with 10 points on the evening.

Jackson finished with a career high 16 points to go along with 8 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 steals. “She was all over the place for us tonight and was really big for us” said Midway Head Coach Jennifer Honeycutt. Tess Williams had 6 points by hitting two three point field goals. Elizabeth McCullen had 4 points and 7 assists. Jada Cannady had 11 points, Jennifer Blackmon had the lone double-double of the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Amber Poole had 6 points and 6 assists also for the Lady Raiders.

“We played well, we shot the ball well, I liked our intensity on both ends of the floor, and I’m glad the seniors got this win. We’ll be on the road from here on out, so it was good to get the win here in front of our folks” finished Coach Honeycutt.

The Lady Raiders travel to Hobbton Friday evening, a game in which they lost in the final seconds the last time the teams faced off in Raider country.
