Harrells Christian Academy’s varsity girls ended their regular season as CFIC Tournament runner-up, falling to rival Fayetteville Christians 50-29 in the tourney final Saturday afternoon.
The girls got to the final after defeating Village Christian Friday night 60-45.
In the semi-final game, played at O’Neal School in Southern Pines, the Lady Crusaders took the early first quarter lead, scoring 21 points of their own while holding their opponent to 8. Harrells kept the momentum going in the second period as well, adding 14 to their first quarter score to take a 35-15 lead in to the break.
But Village Christian wasn’t ready to give up, coming out after the break with renewed energy and taking the Crusader girls to task, cutting into the lead by the end of the third frame, 47-32.
Despite their determination, Village could dig themselves out of the first half deficit, merely trading baskets with the Crusader girls in the final quarter.
Daisha Jordan led scoring for Harrells with 20 points. Regan Murphy had 11; Chloe Campbell land Bucky Everette had 9 each; Emily Benton added 7; and Haylee Parks had 4.
The Lady Crusaders weren’t as fortunate in the tournament championship game, however, with the more powerful Fayetteville Christian girls taking a 16-7 lead after one quarter and maintaining their lead throughout the game.
By the end of the half, FCS was up 31-17. A strong defensive showing in the third quarter by Fayetteville held the Lady Crusaders to 3 points and gave FCS a commanding lead at 41-20 going into the final frame.
Despite a valiant attempt to fight their way back into the game, the Lady Crusaders couldn’t overtake their opponents.
Once again, Jordan led HCA in scoring with 11 points; Everette had 5; Campbell, 4; Parks, 4; Benton, 2; Margaret Clark, 2; and Murphy, 1.
The girls will now move into state tournament play, traveling to Halifax Academy Tuesday for first round action.
