As we come to the end of another week at the General Assembly, I wanted to share a few brief updates on what happened in Raleigh. I would like to thank everyone for all the wonderful feedback they provided. I was given some great ideas about what we can work on in Raleigh and progress is already being made on a few of the ideas.

Legislative updates:

Below you will find a few pieces of legislation that we are in the process of passing this week. You can click on any of the bill numbers for more information on those bills or visit the General Assembly website to look at all the bills we are working on right now. I would encourage you to take the time to read HB 8, if it passes the Senate you will be seeing it as a proposed amendment on the ballot in an upcoming election.

SB 50-

An act to prevent identity theft of discharged Veterans by restricting the release of military service discharge documents.

HB 8 -

An act to amend the North Carolina constitution to prohibit condemnation of private property except for a public use, to provide for the payment of just compensation with right of trial by jury in all condemnation cases, and to make similar statutory changes.

HB 5-

An act requiring the Department of Health and Human Services to provide temporary, short-term financial assistance to group homes serving residents determined not to be eligible for Medicaid covered Personal Care Services as a result of changes to eligibility criteria.

State of the State Address:

It was an honor to be on the floor to watch Governor McCrory give the State of the State on Monday night. The theme of his speech was improving the three E’s: Education, Economy, and (Government) Efficiency. I believe he also shares a vision of making improvements in the Agricultural area and he recognizes how important Agriculture is to our state. He ended his remarks by saying “let’s get back to work,” and I look forward to working with him and other members of the General Assembly over the next few months.

Around the District:

Bluegrass on the Menu: Bluegrass Music is on the menu every Thursday night at Pittman’s Corner Grill in Autryville. Featured musicians is the Old Friends Band. Come enjoy the music, food and fun! The free event is from 5 until 7 p.m. For more information, contact 910-567-6896 for more information.

In closing, I appreciate you allowing me to serve you in the NC General Assembly and if I can ever be of service to you, please feel free to contact me at 919-733-5705 or brent.jackson@ncleg.net.
