Hobbton’s girls slammed their way by Goldsboro Thursday night, earning a 17-1 win in three innings. They had it much tougher Friday night, when they took on a fierce North Duplin team, but the Lady ‘Cats pulled out the eighth-inning win 4-3.
Thursday’s game
The Lady ‘Cats, who return to the diamond after a 19-5 season last year, had the hot bats from the start, scoring 12 points in the opening inning and holding Goldsboro at 0 until the third.
Hobbton’s girls brought 5 more runs in during the second inning and after Goldsboro scored one in the bottom of the third, the game was over, giving the Lady ‘Cats a win on the opening night of their 2013 season.
Coach Morgan Farroll said she thought her girls played well, particularly considering five of her starters had their first practice one day earlier, on Wednesday.
“They were hitting well and fielding well, especially since they’d only practiced the one time.”
Hobbton returns all but two of its players from last year’s team, a club that made it all the way to the fifth round of the state playoffs.
“We should have a good season,” Farroll said. “We are going to work to have a good season.”
Hobbton had three girls on the mound Thursday against Goldsboro — Gracie Olsen started, striking out 2; Brittney Testerman threw 2 strikeouts in the second and Taylor Bowden wrapped it up in the third with 3 strikeouts of her own.
Leading batters for the Wildcats were Bowden, 2-2 with 3 runs, 4 RBIs and 2 home runs; Bailey Moser, 1-1, with 3 runs and a double; Michaela Wilson, 1-1, with 3 runs, one of them a homer and 2 RBIs; Testerman, 1-1, with a triple, 2 runs and an RBI; and Hannah Warren, 1-1 with 1 run.
Friday’s game
Hobbton’s girls were able to come away with a road win versus the Lady Rebels Friday, but it wasn’t a runaway from the start.
Farroll said the Lady ‘Cats played well but started out with a few errors that cost them runs.
“But our bats finally woke up in the sixth inning, with a lead-off double by Brittany Testerman,” Farroll said. “Then Taylor (Bowden) and Michaela (Wilson) both had triples to get us up 3-1.”
In the bottom of the seventh, the Lady Rebels tied it up, but Hobbton came back in the eight to score one more run off a Bowden double Baileigh Moser got a sacrifice bunt down to move Bowden to third, and Wilson scored Bowden with a RBI single.
Bowden was 3-4 with a triple, a double and 2 runs; Wilson was 2-4, with a triple, 1 RBI and a run; Moser had a sac bunt; Casey Hobbs was 1-4 with an RBI; and Testerman was 1-4 with a double and a run.
Gracie Olsen was on the mound all eight innings for Hobbton, tossing 5 strikeouts.
The win moves Hobbton’s record to 2-0.
