Sampson sheriff’s investigators are continuing an investigation into an incident that occurred over the weekend when two residents offered another a ride and were paid back by being robbed and assaulted.
Capt. Eric Pope said officers have a person of interest in the case, and detectives were currently investigating the incident.
The robbery took place Saturday night when Jonah Phillip Smith, 21, of Pickleshed Lane, Clinton and a friend, James Bryd of Windstone Lane, Clinton offered to give a man a ride.
As they were traveling down Hobbton Highway near Keener reports note that the suspect attempted to stab Smith with an unknown object.
The vehicle’s driver, Byrd, pulled over and he and Smith jumped out and ran.
Another friend, reports show, happened to be in the area at the time of the incident and picked Smith up, transporting him to the hospital where he received stitches.
When the pair returned to get the car, reports show cash, keys and a cell phone had been taken.
No further details were available at press time.
