The annual Simple Gifts Fund interview day was held Saturday, March 2 at Sampson Community College. A qualified panel of judges interviewed seniors Marcy McLamb, Caitlyn Joyner, and Madison Bryant from Hobbton High School, Ryan Wuester from Lakewood High School, Casey Yang from Clinton High School, and Deborah Murph Jacobs from Sampson Community College.
An interview before the judges’ panel is a requirement of the Simple Gifts scholarship finalists. Each finalist must submit a detailed application that includes answers to essay questions, a complete transcript, recommendations, and college choice information. The steps in the application process are ranked and given points by the judges. Once the finalists are ranked, then finalists must be accepted and decide to attend a liberal arts college outside the state of North Carolina. The trustees of the Simple Gifts Fund would like to fund as many finalists as their fifty thousand dollar budget allows. Once the top finalist’s needs are met, funds may be available for the next ranking finalist(s).
In addition to the Simple Gifts Fund Scholarship, this year, due to the quality of the finalists and their considerable accomplishments the trustees of the Simple Gifts Fund have decided to award each finalist a scholarship of $1,000 to the college he or she chooses to attend. This scholarship is an extraordinary opportunity for Sampson County students to explore colleges that they might not have thought they could afford. The scholarship is available to students who graduate from a high school in Sampson County or with an associate degree from Sampson Community College.
