The first golf match for many of the county’s teams took place Monday afternoon at Coharie Country Club in Clinton. It was a non-conference match in which Clinton High School claimed the team victory with a score of 174. This was a nine hole match and it included Clinton, Midway, Union, and Lakewood.
The Dark Horse team, as mentioned earlier, won the event with their top four scores totalling 174. They were led by freshman Reid Darden, who was hot with the putter and brought in a score of 40. Darden’s round of 4 over par was good enough to earn him medalist honors in the event. He was followed by Peyton Holder who shot a six over par round of 42, Heyden Lanier and Freddie Bath, who each shot 46, and Lane Hall who shot 56.
Midway finished second in the event with a team score of 198. They were led by Caleb Sanders’s 46. Zach Dixon followed with a 48. Tyler Braun, Drew Johnson and Dillon Hawley shot 49 each. Chris Dixon shot 50, Clay Honeycutt shot 52, Logan Allen shot 53, Ben Edwards shot 54, and Trent Mallard shot 61.
Union was next with a 199 total. Tyler Ross and Evan Johnson played solid, shooting 46 and 43, respectively. Spence Usher shot 54, Brady Roberts shot 56, Hunter Johnson shot 60, and Andrew Marsh carded a 61.
Lakewood finished last with a 201 total. For the Leopard team, Griffin Faricloth played a solid round on a difficult front nine at Coharie, shooting a five over par 41. Timmy White followed with a 47, while Allison Heinz and Ricky Webb shot 55 and 58, respectively. Other scores for the Leopards include Ryan Smith and Taylor Freeman each shooting 58, Casey Lewis shooting 60, and Trace Faulk with a 61.
Union’s head coach Tim Pope was pleased with the way some of his players played. “That front nine’s really tough, anything around 40 is really good” noted Pope.
The conference portion of the season starts Wednesday at 4 p.m. back at Coharie Country Club for Midway and Union. Lakewood and Hobbton are scheduled to go to Rockfish Country Club in Wallace to play. Other teams participating at Coharie on Wednesday include Trask and Pender, while the other teams that are scheduled to play at Rockfish on Wednesday are James Kenan and Wallace.
