Charles E. Perry/RC Alumni Association partnered with Kramden Institute of Research Triangle Park to help bridge the digital divide for the students at Charles E. Perry Elementary School in Roseboro.

Rubestene Fisher Potter, coordinator of the School Adoption Project, Mrs. Rochelle Stuart, president of the C.E. Perry Alumni Association, Dr. Mark Dibner, CEO of Kramden Institute and Mr. Donald Boykin, principal of Charles E. Perry Elementary, are excited about the computer

“Give-a-Thon,” where 60 students will be awarded computers to carry home.

The computer Give-a-Thon is scheduled for this Saturday, April 4, starting at 9 a.m. at the elementary school, located at 705 Gold St., Roseboro. At the scheduled times, six students and their families will receive computers after they have been trained on the operation of the computer and use of its programs. All computers should be in the hands of the new owners by 12:30 p.m.

A total of 60 computers will be given to the students to help bridge the academic achievement gap. At an upcoming Give-A-Thon, the students at Roseboro-Salemburg Middle will also be awarded computers.

Kramden Institute's mission includes placing computers in the homes of students who work hard in school. The school identifies motivated students who do not have working computers in their homes and those students' families are contacted by the school.

Charles E. Perry Elementary School, at its inception, was a high school from 1938 until 1969. In 1969, the site became an elementary school. The alumni embarked upon the challenge of providing more opportunities for the children and teachers at C.E. Perry. Through the Charles E. Perry School Adoption Project, the major focus has been to provide educational opportunities for students and teachers and make available additional supplies needed to prepare them for classroom work.

On opening day, all faculty and staff were given a canvas bag filled with supplies. All students were given a bag of additional supplies as well. The goal is to ensure that all students are performing at proficient levels.

In addition to the Kramden Institute, the Charles E. Perry Alumni Association has an ongoing partnership with the Triangle Park Chapter of The Links, Inc. This organization put a clothes closet at the school to provide clothes for students as needed. The Links to Books program gives second graders a new book monthly to carry home and add to their personal libraries prepared by the Alumni Association. Additional sponsorship by members of CEP Alumni Association provides books to five additional classes. All second and third grade students receive a new book monthly to enhance their reading skills and promote family literacy.

Durham Alumnae and Clinton Alumnae Chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. partnered with the CEP Alumni by exposing students to the SEE (Science In Everyday Experiences) program which gives students an opportunity to participate in science activities.

North Carolina Department of Public Instruction School Safety and Climate Section has also been an invaluable partner for four years, Charles E. Perry High School Alumni members said. They commented that they are proud to partner with the Kramden Institute as they level the playing field with children owning their own computers.
