Clinton Police officers have captured a fugitive after two local women reported the man trying to break into a residence at Dogwood Circle Monday evening.

According to reports, police responded to a breaking and entering in progress call around 6:28 p.m. at the Dogwood Circle residence. When officers arrived on the scene, they saw two women pointing to a man who was considered to be the suspect in the breaking and entering.

The officers split off, with one officer talking with the two women while the other headed after the suspect, who was walking away from the home.

According to detailed reports, the incident began when an unidentified man was “banging” on the front door of the Dogwood Circle home where one of the women lived. She was, reports show, was home alone. Frightened, she called police and then a neighbor to come over to be with her once the man had gone. Minutes later, the man attempted to enter the bedroom window of the woman’s home while the two were inside.

As police drove up, the man took off.

The suspect, identified as Carlos Colon Gonzalez, 36, of 108 Dogwood Circle, Clinton, was taken into custody and charged with attempted breaking and entering.

Once at the Sampson County Law Enforcement Center, it was discovered the man was a wanted fugitive in Puerto Rico. Gonzalez was placed on a $1,500 secured bond and given a trail date of May 6. He is currently awaiting extradition to Puerto Rico as a fugitive.
