The ministers of Central Baptist Church thought outside of the box to make their annual Easter Eggstreme Easter egg hunt truly extreme. Their plan involves 6,000 plastic eggs falling out of the sky.

To reach out to children throughout Sampson and Harnett counties, the ministers of Central Baptist Church have organized an Easter egg hunt called Easter Eggstreme the week before Easter every year, according to children’s minister Jeremy Autry. The event is geared for kids in sixth grade and younger, Autry noted.

“The event has evolved over the last few years to become more and more exciting,” stated Autry.

Keeping with the tradition of adding to the excitement each year, the ministers put their heads together again to brainstorm, Autry remarked. Together they came up with a different spin on an Easter egg hunt.

Central’s event won’t require adults to hide the eggs for children to find. Instead, youngsters will stand in a designated, roped-off area while an airplane drops 6,000 plastic Easter eggs from the sky, Autry explained. “Then we’ll let the hounds loose,” he commented referring to the eager children who will be awaiting to “hunt” and pick up the eggs.

Autry is excited about hosting this event for the children, and he said the extraordinary nature of the event reflects the true meaning of Easter — the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

“At Central Baptist, it’s very important to us to show kids that Jesus is not boring; He’s awesome. Easter is about Jesus getting up from the grave. How exciting is that? So as we celebrate Easter, we wanted to create an event that was extraordinary; that’s where the idea for the Easter Eggstreme came from ... We want to do the unexpected. We want kids to say, ‘Wow, church can be cool.’ So this year, we’ll drop 6,000 Easter eggs from an airplane. We think that’s a pretty interesting way to celebrate Easter.”

In addition to the egg drop, other activities will be available for the children. Once all of the eggs have been picked up, children can redeem them for prizes, and inflatable rides will also be on site for children to play on.

The day is intended to be one of fun and games, and reaching out to the community. But, Autry also plans to share the gospel with the children in an age-appropriate way and teach them that Jesus is the true reason to celebrate Easter.

“During the Easter Eggstreme, I’ll tell kids about this amazing and exciting Jesus. I’ll make sure they all know hat He got up from the dead on Easter morning. And I’ll take a minute to tell them how they can know Jesus themselves. Then we’ll have an incredible time with the egg drop, inflatables and a ton of candy and prizes.”

The ministers of Central Baptist Church are praying that the day will be one of fun and worship. Autry concluded, “The Easter Eggstreme is completely free, and we are praying that kids from the community show up to have an exciting time with us.”

The event is open to the public, and all children from birth to sixth grade are welcome to participate. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at noon.

Central Baptist Church is located at 6050 Plainview Hwy., Dunn, in the Plainview community.
