Cannady noted that the project, worth approximately $428,000, will have a completed contract with Fasco Contractors in mid-July, and he stressed that it can be as early as 30 days after that before the commissioners can begin holding their meeting in the auditorium again.
The project, Cannady stressed, actually began about five years ago when the county administration had considered taking over the old K-Mart facility, the location of the current Roses store.
“Everyone was busting at the seams at the time,” expressed Cannady in reference to how tight the administration and Department of Social Services offices were at the time.
While the County Board of Commissioners may be able to hold its first meeting in the new auditorium in the fall, some other offices will be impaced by the move. For one, the Head Start office will be moving from its current location in the old county home to the previous home of the Sampson County Administration offices. This concept of housing Head Start in the Sampson County Board of Education was created by former county manager Scott Sauer when the Board of Education office administration asked to stay in its current location.
In addition, the old Department of Social Services building will soon be housing the county’s Department of Aging, Recreation Department and Environomental Health. However, Cannady has not announced the scheduled dates for those moves.
Also, in a previous interview with Sauer, he expressed that the goal is also to tear down the old county home. However, when Cannady was asked about those plans, he did not have any update and chose to not comment further on this.
“There is mention of down the road, but I prefer not to discuss it,” said Cannady.
