Have you felt overwhelmed lately? Every time you turn around it’s problems after problems. It seems as if you get blessed by God and then there is a storm you’re having to go through. These issues and situations have made you ask God questions. That’s a natural thing to do. As I have said earlier in an column, it’s OK to ask God questions. He knows that you’re human. Jesus asked, “Father, why has thou forsaken me?” which shows the human side of Him.

When these overwhelming issues of life come, and you don’t know what to do, read Psalm 77:3-12 and listen what the penman writes. Verses 3-6 says, “I remembered God and was troubled: I complained and my spirit was overwhelmed. Thou holdest mine eyes waking I am so trouble that I cannot speak. I have considered the days of old the years of ancient times. I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart and my spirit made diligent search.” Just in those verses, so many of God’s people can relate. Notice it said the word “remembered,” which is a word that we as Christians sometimes fear. It’s OK to remember if it’s on the goodness of Jesus and all that He has done for you. Yes, we need to forget those things that we did that was not of God and look back at all He has done even before we confess.

So many times — and I can only speak for me, but I am sure you can relate — my praise and worship sometimes is on all the things He’s done in my life. We as children of God should stop and think back at how God was there in that problem. Even when we went through that we thought were not going to make it, God was there. I’m grateful for all He’s doing in my life right now. But, people of God, He has kept me and you from some unseen things of life. Reflecting on how Jesus showed up just in time can help us with our current issues and problems.

Verse 7:12 says, “Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more? Is His mercy clean and gone forever? Doth His promise fail forevermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious? Hath He in anger shut up His tender mercies? And I said, this is my infirmity; but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most high. I will remember the works of the Lord; surely I will remember Thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all Thy work and talk of Thy doings.” Oh, my my, there is so much of what we think sometimes in these verses. He is real and honest with how He feels, saints. He asks questions that maybe lately you’ve asked God or thought about asking. Even in how he started out feeling about his situation, notice he said in the last verse, “I will meditate on all Thy work and talk of Thy doings.” He’s doing nothing but reminding himself of how God has brought him through and speaking it to himself. There is so much to learn from Psalm 77 because we are at some point going through or have gone through some overwhelming situations. People of the Lord, when overwhelmed with problems, do as this penman did— remember then meditate on all the goodness of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Lord, help us to remember all that You have brought us through. We need You now to help us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
