With thoughts of giving back in the forefront of their minds, groups of county residents got together to help raise funds for the Sampson Crisis Center. This year’s fundraising was the organization’s third annual extravaganza that contained dancing, singing and food.

According to literature provided to guests at the event, “the Sampson Crisis Center, which was established as a volunteer health and welfare organization to coordinate and implement local benevolent giving of Sampson County churches, organizations and individuals.”

Some of the entertainment for the evening included inspirational dances by Carlethea Brown and the First Baptist Worship Team. Additional dances were from a troupe at Lorie’s School of Dance. More musical entertainment was provided by performers Retha Hobbs and the Messengers.

In addition, residents throughout Sampson County showcased some of the many clothes that can be found and bought at the Crisis Center Thrift Shop, which director Rochelle Stuart affectionately called the “CC Boutique.”

However, entertainment was not the only purpose of the event, and Stuart made that clear in her message to the guests at the event.

“I challenge all of us to remain steadfast in our effort to maintain the quality of life to the citizens in our county,” said Stuart. In essence, she hoped that through the extravaganza and additional support to the crisis center, it will assure the success of the crisis center and all of its programs.

Willie Mitchell, the Crisis Center Board chairman, addressed the group with the organization’s reason for committing to its efforts.

“Our mission at the Crisis Center is to address the basic human needs of the Sampson County citizens who face an unforeseen personal or financial crisis. It is through various grants, donations and fund-raiser events that help us to fill and meet the challenges that face our citizens who may be experiencing difficulties in supplying their basic needs of food, clothing and shelter,” said Mitchell.

With the guests stomachs full, Mitchell, Stuart and the other leaders at the Crisis Center encouraged guests to commit to the center.

In Mitchell’s letter, he commented, “And now, I challenge those we are looking for a way to be of service to their community to consider volunteering your time with us at the Sampson Crisis Center.”
