Dogs and foxes suspected to be rabid often spark concerned calls to local law enforcement authorities, however Wednesday night it was a suspicious — and possibly rabid — feline in the area of the Sampson County Complex that drew response from Sampson County sheriff’s deputies.

The strange cat was reported by a woman cleaning up the county offices after 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to Animal Control officer Tim Bass. The cat was seen outside the government offices at 360 County Complex Road, just off Rowan Road.

Deputies responded after being relayed information by a dispatcher who had received a 911 call, Bass noted. A report filed at the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded at 9:30 p.m. to a “rabid feline.”

“They sent a deputy out there and the cat came at him,” said Bass, who also responded. “It didn’t ever attack him, but it came at him. The deputy was trying to stop him.”

The deputy discharged a .22-caliber Glock in an attempt to incapacitate the cat, but was unsuccessful.

“When the deputy shot at him, he ran,” Bass remarked. “We couldn’t find it. We don’t know for sure if it had rabies. We couldn’t see him or get to him. It ran in the drain tile and I tried to get at it but couldn’t.”

Bass said he saw the feline, which did not have a collar on its neck. It looked strange and there was something awry about the way it was acting, he noted.

“His head and all was wobbling,” the animal control officer said.

Possibly rabid cats, he said, are not normally the source of many calls for Animal Control.

“Most of the time, it’s a wild animal, not a domesticated animal,” Bass noted.

Bass and others went back out to County Complex Road Thursday morning, but there was no sign of the cat. The feline is described only as being white and gray in color.

He warned others in the area to be cautious, and to report any suspicious activity to authorities.

“We don’t know where he went. They went out there this morning and they didn’t see anything,” stated Bass, who heeded others to be on the lookout. “If they see a cat acting strange, they need to call us and not try to go to it. If it’s after hours, they need to call 911.”

Too late to save face now, peter( you ever notice most people in Sampson County can't say a female's name ending with "A" without pronouncing an "R" at the end? Anner, Jenner, peter, susaner....). You have shown your hand as a passive aggressive, vaginized eunuch. It's ok you don't understand sarcasm because most people on here have trouble with it. I personally don't take offence to anything you say about me. I wear it as a badge of honor. Opnions vary and if I said anything to offend you, I'll take great care not to hurt your feelings again.

JAFS and MrSampco, I apologize for being unable to poke fun at law enforcement officers. Note I said "officers", because I can't bring myself to poke fun at the ones that are actually on patrol trying to make a difference. By all means I am not saying everyone of them is, but for those that do, I prefer to post positive things about them. I can say MrSampco at first your postings hit the wrong nerve with me, but looking back everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I am glad we live in a society where that is possible. So guys continue on, but something positive would be welcome every once in a while. And did you guys not miss the sarcasm in the fact that my screen name is Peta? I mean that's pretty sarcastic? hmm

#1 I'd like to thank the SI for printing this article and all of the commentators thus far. The endorphins I released laughing as I read all this has been priceless.

#2 I'd like to welcome Moxy to the crew because I can see she has potential for sarcasm far beyond what I initially thought and I would love to see MrSampco wrapped in a hot pink tarp!

#3 Peta obviously you don't "get it". Law enforcement has been made fun of and will always be made fun of...get over it and laugh at the humorous side of the postings. Barney didn't mind being ridiculed! It's not that serious.

#4 I suggest given the number of feral felines, rabid foxes and attack dogs running through the town of Clinton that the mayor donate his salary(I'm referring to the attorney salary not the mayor salary) to hiring several more animal control officers or better yet, set up a program to deliver BBQ and donuts to the officers at the scene! This would benefit everyone involved....the officers save the public from rabid animals, get target practice and get to eat. Looks like a win, win, win

First, moxy04, might I suggest a Midol for you?

It's obvious you're having some sort of hormonal imbalance.

Now, to the meat and gravy of the subjects. It's pretty plain the SI puts stories like the marauding felines and thuggish dogs terrorizing the country side because it's ridiculous. The town has to pull law enforcement officials off more important things just to satisfy (suck up to) so called prominent citizens of coharie and fox lake. Yes, I said citizens because if you haven't noticed, there are two social classes in the area.

Peta, to answer your question about shooting lightning fast cats in dimly lit areas. I plead the 5th ( that's protection from self incrimination under the Constitution to all you in Hayne Skretch, Roseboro, Clinton and Rebel City). If you would "RE-READ" the previous comments about this subject, you will find they are littered with sarcasm. I hate to say it, but you are sarcasticly challenged and very naive.

And for you, moxy04, one more time. If you would bother to actually read and study my various postings throughout the SI, you would know where I stand on numerous subjects. Unfortunately, you will be unable to do that as long as your head is stuck in your "third point of contact".

The Sampson Independent should strive to provide more accurate information in their articles. Deputies in this county use Model 22 Glocks, which is a .40 caliber pistol. I would suspect that if the animal was rabid the deputies would be authorized to kill the animal to protect the citizens of this county. I would question all the patrons that made comments about the deputies shooting capabilities, When was the last time that you shot at a moving cat, in a dimly lit area with a pistol? And say that I hope none of you have to as far as that goes. Also, the cat was apparently acting in such an unusual manner that a call was made to investigate, so would that not make a normal person think something was seriously wrong with the feline? I know I wouldn't call 911 just because I saw a cat walking in a parking lot. I think there is more to this than meets the eye. I also think that if the animal was acting that strangely the deputy can be justified in trying to "incapacitate" it, without the cat "coming at it with it's dukes up". As I first began, the Sampson Independent should attempt to get more accurate information. Also, specifically to the patrons that leave comments about law enforcement officers eating habits....I wasn't aware that once those officers put on a badge they can no longer eat doughnuts, or take a meal break without being ridiculed.

Mr Sampco, Mrscumbco,

Since obviously you two individuals are unhappy with just about everything that goes on in Sampson County and based on the comments you post you both seem to feel that your intellect is far superior to the residents and officials of Sampson County; Just leave the area!! Surely you can find Eutopia somewhere in the world, with people that you really agree with and like. Just wishing you a happier day!! LOL.. If you think you could have any (happiness that is).

Maybe the whole cat senario was actually a case of mistaken identity. Since it was County property, could it have been Mr. Rick Borefield, County Mgr.,surveying the property, preparing it for the BLUE TARP and working up a cost estimate for the commissioners......

MrSampco you have done it again! You have let the cat out of the bag, so to speak. The artists Christo-Jeanne Claude are coming to Clinton and they are going to wrap the entire town in a BLUE TARP. Now for the Coach BundyDads and GatorToting Moms will have to leave town for awhile due to allergic reactions I believe. Kudos again on your giving us the insight on this historic event.

God Bless America!

“We don’t know where he went. They went out there this morning and they didn’t see anything,” stated Bass, who heeded others to be on the lookout. “If they see a cat acting strange, they need to call us and not try to go to it. If it’s after hours, they need to call 911.”

WRONG!!!!

It should read, "If they see a cat acting strange, they need to shoot the animal themselves, and not try to call us. We can't shoot a moving target. We're the SCSO, we don't use our firearms. If it's after hours, just give up til tomorrow, we don't do that either."

Why is a Sampson County deputy discharging a .22 caliber ANYTHING....are we overpaying our Sheriff and our D.A.'s so much to be politicians and media children that we cant afford something a little more conducive to law enforcement....a .40 maybe??? But then again, as usual....par for the course.

Maybe the police could use Coach Bass' blue tarp at Union Middle School to help trap the maraudering felines. It's did wonders keeping busy body parents from invading the dugout.

Well on the shooting of the cat it showed the Sheriff's Office Training at it's finest. Well that shows the the type of idiots that John Conerly Deputy Cheif hires and Sheriff Thorton goes along with his little john decision and just think this is the type of public service that citizens pay for. This is a surprise to me that the Sheriff's Office did not send out the SERT team to catch this cat. Looks like another cat got away from Deputys, still on the run like all the other criminals in Sampson County.

Sorry, zookeeper, I'm not an abusive person, but I would have shot that cat and made sure the other eight lives didn't have a chance either. Once a cat is feral, they're not much use for anything but target practice.

First, Animal haters are usually abusive people. Second, if People took responsibility for their animals and got them Rabies Shots and Veterinary Care and had them spayed or neutered then we would have less problems with "wild" animals. I agree that a trained deputy should have been able to hit his target but cats can be fast. I hope that instead of just checking to see if it reappears they set a "Live Trap" for it and then it can be tested and dealt with then. I once called Animal Control to try and help 3 of us who had tried to catch a dog with a collar and tags behind the Go-Gas on 24. He came with food and tried to coax him by calling to him and snapping his fingers at him. We had already done that for 2 hours, we had also tried to use the catch stick noose approach. We needed the A C Officer (he was not Tim Bass by the way) to tranquilize the animal so we could see his tags and call his owners who had reported him as escaped and had left their number at the Hotel behind Taco Bell but the Hotel Staff had thrown it away. Instead he chased him onto Hwy 24 and he was last seen running across the field beside Tractor Supply. Then he sent a live trap and caught a Feral Cat and kittens that were behind Go Gas, so at least some good cameof the call. The kittens were adoptable (do not believe the website about the lack of an adoption program at our Shelter) but the Mother was Feral and had to be put down. Bottom line, take care of your animals so other people and theirs won't be in danger and that our Law Officers can do their work in other areas of crime. And if you have not paid your taxes, do so then maybe we can afford to have more Staff at the Animal Control Office. Thanks.

From the article, I understood that the animal was not posing a threat to life or property. Maybe I am wrong. He could have been employed at the complex in some capacity....Janitor....etc....lol

G-Girl....It was the sheer stupidness of a deputy responding to a cat that got me....It seems to me that everytime Tim Bass is needed to perform his job he is NEVER around! Responding to animals should never be the responsibility of a deputy. That falls clearly under the authority of animal control and a deputy should never be called for this nonsense.

I don't like cats...wish he could have killed it! I also wish this officer was the one who was called to Zeng's the other night for the "disturbance"...I'm all for shooting the criminals who are stupid and disrespectful enough to run! And MrsRobco and MrSampco (who I usually agree with) please PLEASE don't call 911 if you need these officers who you are so disparaging to...I'm guessing you can protect yourself. So please don't take valuable time away from those of us who APPRECIATE the job they do. They shouldn't be the ones sent on a "cat call" anyway....

Any wild animal has unusual behavior when cornered. Did he come at the deputy with his dukes up? ...or did he come at him showing his teeth?.....or was he simply trying to get out of the corner?....or did the cat have a gun?...or was the cat operating without a license?....or was he a felon on the run? The officer was so in fear of his life he pulled his gun?

I've always heard that an "EXCUSE" was the skin of the truth stuffed with lies........Sounds like the officer was a little trigger happy but not steady enough to hit his target. To the officer who responded to the call.........spend more time on the firing range and less time eating BBQ or drinking coffee and eating doughnuts so if a real situation ever presents itself and your life is in danger you might be able to defend yourself. You might not have a backup officer around.
