Kenan, who helped run Perdue’s campaign for governor in Duplin County, was recognized by school board chairwoman Emily Manning and superintendent Dr. Wiley Doby at a meeting earlier this week. Both Doby and Manning congratulated Kenan and expressed their joy at his selection and the potential benefits it could bring to education inDuplin County and southeastern North Carolina education.
He has been on the Duplin County school board since 1989. Born in Duplin County in October, 1955, Kenan attended Wallace-Rose Hill High School. The youngest of six children of Walter and Margaret Kenan, he attends New Christian Chapel Baptist Church in Rose Hill. Kenan received his undergraduate degree in economics from Guilford College where he also was an outstanding athlete receiving such honors as All-American in football and the Nereus English Award.
Deciding not to pursue a career in professional football, Kenan entered the Campbell University School of Law for his Juris Doctorate degree where he graduated with honors.
Following completion of law school Kenan entered into practice with attorney Louis Jordan in Goldsboro. In 1981 Kenan joined the District Attorney’s office and in 1985 he opened his own private practice in Duplin County.
“I am honored so much to have been nominated by Governor Perdue,” Kenan said. “ I look forward to the challenge after approval from the state legislature and I also know it will be a difficult task. Education of all our children is my biggest challenge and I hope to be able to meet that challenge. I have always been a strong believer in public education and hope to serve not only the citizen of Duplin County but the students all across the state of North Carolina,” shared Kenan.
In addition to serving on the Duplin County Board of Education, Kenan is a member of the NAACP, on the Board of Directors of BB&T in Warsaw, on the Trustee Board of New Christian Chapel Baptist Church, a member of the N.C. Global Transpark, member of the N.C. Bar Association and participates in a mentoring program.
