Do yourself a favor this year and participate. You will not only benefit physically, but emotionally as well. Get up and get outside! Join friends and neighbors to go for a walk.
Better yet, visit your local senior center and join in the fun and activities. Each center offers a variety of programs and activities to keep you both mentally and physically fit. Enjoy fun activities such as quilting at the Bellamy Senior Center, have a blast with the regulars at Harrell’s Nutrition Site, participate in low-impact exercises at the Clement Nutrition Site, enjoy the company and have delightful conversations with the participants at the Garland Senior Center, learn about healthy nutrition habits at the Butler Court Nutrition Site, get your blood pressure checked in observance of National Stroke Awareness Month at the Roseboro Nutrition Site, find out how portion distortion has changed our eating habits at the Turkey Nutrition Site, socialize with others at the Westbrook Nutrition Site, and get fit with the participants at the Mingo Nutrition Site!
Being healthy doesn’t mean boring exercises; it can be fun and exciting! Chair exercises are a great workout option during a TV commercial break. Challenge your partner to see who can walk further and turn it into a bet, whomever stops first has to do the dishes. Kickball isn’t just for kids, gather a bunch of your friends and put your chairs in a circle and enjoy kicking the ball around. Better yet, do the same thing with a balloon and keep it from touching the floor! Incorporate a variety of exercises to keep it fun and most importantly, don’t forget to stretch!
• Get Up - Find things to keep you busy mentally (this doesn’t include watching TV)
• Get Out - Be sure to visit your doctor on a regular basis (preventative screenings)
• Get Moving - Stay active for your health
In observance of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, get up, get out, and get moving for your health!
