RALEIGH — Mr. Walter Richard Spell passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Walter was born in Sampson County, North Carolina on June 24, 1933 to the late Annie Lee and Robbie H. Spell.
Walter was a proud graduate and lifelong supporter of East Carolina University. Walter served his country as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army. He worked for the State of North Carolina as a Computer Systems Analyst for 35 years. After retirement he served as Assistant Sergeant at Arms for the North Carolina Legislature for seven years. He was a charter member of North Ridge Country Club where he served on the Board of Governors from 1998-2000. He was an avid golfer who shot a 79 the last time he played. He loved spending time at Kiawah Island with his family and friends. He was a member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church in Raleigh.
Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years Mary; his daughters, Mary Mac Brock and husband Tommy of McKinney, Texas, Leigh Welch and husband Reuben of Snellville, Georgia, Paige Hyman and husband Kevin of Thomson, Georgia; sister Faye Warren and husband Doug; brother Lynwood Spell, and seven grandchildren, Katherine Brock, Zachary Brock, Lindsey Welch, Blair Welch, Andrew Hyman, Alex Hyman and Abby Hyman.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, 7506 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27615.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made "In Memory of Walter R. Spell” to Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church.

George H. Thomas Jr., 70
WALLACE — Mr. George H. Thomas Jr., 70, of 573 Norwood-Blanchard Road, died Friday, June 12, 2009, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 20, at Union Baptist Church, 147 Rock Road, Wallace, with the Rev. Larry Green officiating.
Burial will follow at Pickett Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church, Friday, June 19, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Annie Thomas of the home; daughters, Georgia Highsmith and Sheila Lanier, both of Raleigh, and Sherilyn Robinson of Wallace; son, Wilfred Thomas of Rose Hill; sisters, Nellie Harper and evangelist Annie Gaines of New York; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Waits A. West, 81
ROSEBORO — Mr. Waits Artemus “Teamie” West, 81, of 711 North East St., died on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Southwood Nursing & Retirement Center in Clinton.
A funeral will be held on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Roseboro First Baptist Church with the Rev. Hampton Faircloth officiating. Burial will follow in the Roseboro Cemetery.
Mr. West was born in 1927 in Sampson County to the late Wilbur Latham and Bettie Shearin West. He was a former owner and operator of Tart & West Drug Store. He was a Pharmacist.
Mr. West is survived by his wife, Maxine Crumpler West of the home; one son, Thomas Latham West, of Roseboro; one daughter, Delwood Herren of Wilmington; two sisters, Matilda West of Roseboro, and Betty Grace of Hendersonville; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6-8 o,n, at Butler Funeral Home, 401 W. Roseboro St., Roseboro.
Kahlil G. Nixon, 38
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Kahlil Gibran Nixon, 38, died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, died in Bellevue Hospital in New York City, N.Y.
Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Clinton International Church, 545 Tillery St., Clinton. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Clinton.
