A Clinton man has been charged in connection with the recent robbery of the Marathon Quick Stop, located at 4633 U.S. Highway 421 North, Clinton.

On Thursday, investigators with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office arrested Melvin Joeterno Faulkner, 48, of 626-A Coharie Village Apartments, Clinton, in connection with the robbery that took place on June 14.

The arrest occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m., with the assistance of investigators and uniform personnel of the Clinton Police Department, after a warrant was executed at 626-A Coharie Village Apartments. While taking Faulkner into custody, physical evidence was discovered linking him to the robbery, reports show

On Sunday, June 14, around 9:30 p.m., the Sampson County E-911 Center received a report of an armed robbery at the Marathon Quick Stop. Deputies from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office responded and discovered that the manager, Dwight L. Jackson, had been physically assaulted and robbed at gunpoint. According to reports, the suspect entered the store, displayed a weapon and left with an undetermined amount of cash, checks and lottery ticket money. The victim did not receive any obvious physical injuries.

Sheriff Jimmy Thornton stated that his investigators have been working with Clinton police on several armed robberies that share “similarities.”

“Once Faulkner was identified as the suspect in the Marathon robbery, all the pieces started coming together and now he is considered as a suspect in additional robberies,” said Thornton.

Faulkner was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and placed in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond.

According to Sampson County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Eric Pope, investigators from both agencies are continuing to process evidence and additional charges are expected in the near future.

Sheriff Jimmy Thornton and Capt. Jay Tilley, of the Clinton Police Department, stated that they were proud of the effort put forth by their personnel and they hope to see additional results within the coming days.
