Let the election race begin

The filing period for local municipal elections has begun and will extend through next week, with terms for 23 posts expiring countywide, including four mayoral positions.

Clinton, Garland and Newton Grove will all see its mayors’ terms come to an end, along with the terms of three other elected positions each. Autryville will also need to vote for mayor and two open commissioner seats.

Salemburg will have three Council seats vacated, while Turkey and Harrells will have two board positions come open this year. After having one of the most contested races in Sampson County during the last municipal election in 2007 — four challengers, including a sitting mayor, seeking three open commissioner positions and three others seeking the vacated mayor’s seat — Roseboro will need to fill just one commissioner seat.

Filing for the municipal election actually began at noon Friday. However, with Friday being observed as a holiday, the filing period in Sampson did not get under way until Monday, said Sylvia Thornton, director of the Sampson County Board of Elections.

She said the filing period would extend until noon July 17. The election will be held Nov. 3.

In Clinton, those who will see their terms expire include Mayor Lew Starling, Councilmen Steve Stefanovich (District 1) and Marcus Becton (District 3) and Councilwoman Maxine Harris (District 5).

Of the 23 elected posts coming open, Harris is the only person who has filed as part of the municipal election thus far, according to Thornton. She filed at the Board of Elections Wednesday morning, Thornton said.

In Garland, mayor Anthony Johnson will see his term expire, as will Council members Clayton Cannady, Coleman Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson.

Newton Grove will vote for mayor and three town commissioners seats. The mayoral post is currently held by Gerald W. Darden, while the three board members seeing their terms expire include Brenda L. Raynor, George Schwartz and Gary Mac Herring. Herring was approved for the commissioner’s post by the town board in April 2007, when Judson Herring stepped down from the position following a move out of town.

Autryville mayor Patricia Williams will be up for re-election, along with town commissioners Kenneth B. Johnson and Mickie W. Spell, who all see their terms end this year.

Turkey’s two Council seats being vacated are those held by Anita Ezzell and Kenneth Smith. Roseboro’s lone expiring post will be a commissioner’s seat currently held by Arnold Sandy.

In Salemburg, Councilmen George Lockamy, Arnold Page and Joe Warren are seeing their terms come to an end, as are Harrells Aldermen Robert M. Burley Jr. and Charles S. Moore. Last year’s filing period had to be extended in Harrells because only two incumbents had filed to fill three open positions at the time of the initial deadline.

Thornton attested that it is sometimes a slow process in municipal filing, whether incumbent or challenger.

“It’s usually just hard to get people out to file,” said Thornton. “They normally can’t make up their minds or they’re waiting to see if others are going to file.”

The cost to file is $5 for every position but the mayor of Clinton, which requires a fee of $10, Thornton noted.

There will be one-stop voting offered at the Board of Elections on County Complex Road, however a specific date has not been set, said Thornton, who pointed out the date is in October, usually about two weeks prior to election day.

Contrary to general elections, notably last year’s, voting for municipal elections tends to have a lighter turnout. Early voting is no different, Thornton said.

“In a municipal election, if we have 25 people vote that’s a lot,” she said. “We didn’t have anyone vote early last municipal election.”

I am proud of the civic minded people who are in Sampson County. I personally have lost someone close to me, by way of a drunk driver. To you, G-Girl, is there anyway I could contact you to speak at a function against drunk driving? Also, any of you other individuals, I would love to have you there too. Some of my other causes are child abuse and spousal abuse. These are other community related interest, so just thought I would ask. If interested, just leave a comment. If you are considering running for a seat, this kind of exposure, being against "driving drunk" could help. Thanks so much.

And it's MR. lafe_crick or lafus_crickamus. I go by either one, but whatever is easier for you to spell or pronounce without slurring the words.

Well, anonymous, I am doing something. I have got you and everyone else who reads this online publishing to actually voice an opinion, and for once, to care about something outside the four walls of your private world. I love it when people like you get a fire in their belly. We both agree this county is ridiculously corrupt and something has to be done. Whenever you see an article that I've posted on, I want you to look at how people have viewed it. 200, 300, 500, 1000 ? I'm sure they are not logging in about the article. They are there to see how many people I have stirred up, pissed off or just plain battled.

I will never stop complaining about politics, religion or the shear stupidity of the people you and I grow up around. I don't want you to stop disagreeing with me because for God's sakes someone has to open the eyes of these sheep.

Anything else, anonymous? If not, I have opinions to write and people to offend.

Why do people always have to bring religion into something when it doesn't even apply anywhere in the comments. My question to you Mr. or Miss "lafe-crick" is, "Why don't you run for one of the seats. Instead of being a "complainer",be constructive. I will not get into a shouting match with anyone about politics or religion. I just believe that instead of complaining all the time about situations, do something constructive about it. And to JAFS, the same thing for you. Put your name in the hat and go for it.

What's so offensive about "gonads"? Trusting, here's some free advice to you and the religious elites. Children today pick up far worse language from school, TV, and you, the parents, than they ever would reading the SI comment section. Unlike your mouth, the comments here are screened for obscene content. If children are reading the SI online, why not praise them because at least they may know more about their community than most adults.

Oh, I am sorry what would you suggest I use? The slang terminology? Now, if you have a child smart enough to sit down and read the SI and it's comments I am certain they can read a dictionary as well. Should Webster's remove the terms testicles and gonads from there as well? Let me be more politically correct. Someone in Roseboro needs to find the gumption, fortitude, courage or even B@11$ to rid this town of all it's corruption!

ps. While you're writing that letter to Webster's about removing gonads and testicles how about asking them to replace courteous with curtious.....just saying

25 people huh? I guess they are the only ones who have the right to complain about the government in Sampson County. Everyone else should just continue to be sheep. Trusting, I hope my ID offends you and all the chilren who reads this.

Just saying....

I think the paper needs to get a clear correction on the town of Roseboro. There are actually 3 commissioner seats this election. JAFS actually needs to be more curtious. Children are smart enough to read comments and they do know what that word means.

Hey G-girl, why don't you fill that commissioner's seat in Roseboro. They need a set of gonads over there!
