With the sun shinning just right late Saturday afternoon, Hobbton, Lakewood, North Duplin and Bunn High Schools traveled to the Leopard Stadium where they completed the second installment of the annual Pigskin Jamboree.

Lakewood and Bunn at 6 p.m.

Because the Leopards were now hosting the second installment, they were put in dark jerseys and were first to execute 10 plays on offense.

During their time with the ball, Lakewood’s wide receiver Darlon Kinlock advanced to the 15-yard line off of a pass from quarterback Dennis Owens.

Following this play however, Owens lost five yards, leaving the Leopards on the 20 yard line. It should be duly noted that they only play from the 40 yard line to the goal line.

Owens eventually gained a few yards back during the next play after carrying the ball to the 11-yard line.

Lakewood continued to advance the ball against Bunn’s defense, eventually making a touchdown with 44:30 on the clock. The touchdown was made when Kinlock caught a pass thrown into the end zone.

After completing their ten plays, Bunn’s offense took the field with 41:23 on the clock.

At 36:15 Bunn made a touchdown.

Lakewood gained possession of the ball again with 30:30 on the clock, and during their time on offense, a 20-yard pass intended for Kinlock went incomplete; running back David Rich advanced 10 yards to the 30-yard line; and Owens gained a few yards on a carry, but no touchdown was made.

Bunn took control of the ball again with roughly 15 minutes left on the clock and were able to run the ball in at 14:20 for their second touchdown.

With 8 minutes left on the clock, Lakewood’s offense took the field, scoring another touchdown with less than a minute on the clock and ending the scrimmage in a tie.

“We lived through it,” Lakewood’s head coach James Lewis said after playing Bunn. “I saw some good things and some bad things, but it was what we expected.”

As for the season, Lewis said that the team needs to work on their stunts inside, and the defense needs to run to the ball better.

“We got a lot of work to do and very little time to do it in,” Lewis concluded.

Hobbton and North Duplin at 6 p.m.

Simultaneous to the Lakewood and Bunn scrimmage, Hobbton saw North Duplin on the far end of the field.

Because Hobbton was in dark, they were first to execute 10 plays, going ten and out with two fumbles.

North Duplin took possession of the ball with roughly 41 minutes left on the clock and at 32:55 ran the ball in for a touchdown.

At 31:50 Hobbton’s offense took the field again, gaining roughly 20 yards in their first set of plays.

With 24:30 on the clock a pass from quarterback James Tyndall, intended for running back Eli Chestnutt was called incomplete.

Before switching with North Duplin for the offense, Hobbton was able to make a touchdown.

With roughly 23 minutes left on the clock, North Duplin took possession of the ball; however, during their first set of plays, a pass was intercepted by Hobbton’s linebacker Jesse Yaw.

The next play was intended for Rebel Jamison Bell, but was incomplete, and the play to follow was intercepted by Hobbton, moving the Rebels back to the 40-yard line.

At 14:20, North Duplin’s Shayne Deaver scored a touchdown.

With roughly 14 minutes left, Hobbton took over with a fumble on the first play.

During their last time on offense, Hobbton’s Chestnutt scored another touchdown with 5:07 on the clock.

This scrimmage, too, ended in a tie.

“I thought we got better in our second series,” Hobbton’s head coach Jeff Byrd said. “We couldn’t hold onto the football though.”

As for the upcoming season, Byrd said, “It is hard to tell how we will do. We need to work out the kinks.”

Lakewood and North Duplin at 7 p.m.

After a ten minute break, Lakewood matched up with North Duplin for another 50-minute, non-stop scrimmage.

With 46:16 on the clock, Lakewood advanced into scoring position and three minutes later were able to run the ball in on North Duplin’s defense.

At 41:32, North Duplin’s offense gained possession and answered Lakewood’s touchdown, after Devin Oliver ran the ball in, with 36:46 on the clock.

With roughly 31 minutes left, Lakewood took over on offense and started off with a fumble from tight end Marcus Page.

Eventually the Leopards advanced into scoring position with 27:39 on the clock, and within a minute a touchdown was made.

Following, with 23:57 on the clock, the Leopards scored again off a 30-yard pass from quarterback Dennis Owens.

North Duplin’s other touchdown came at 18:36 when Julio Mora carried the ball into the end zone.

This scrimmage, too, ended in a tie.

Hobbton and Bunn at 8 p.m.

Simultaneous to the Lakewood and North Duplin game, Hobbton and Bunn matched up on the far end of the field.

The first touchdown during this scrimmage came at 44:24 when Hobbton’s Xavier Thompson carried the ball into the end zone.

Prior to the touchdown, running back Henry Barnes and quarterback Brad Evans gained a combination of 18 yards for the Wildcats.

When Bunn took possession of the ball, with roughly 43 minutes left on the clock, a touchdown was made off a 15-yard pass from quarterback Montrel Cook to running back Richard Dunston.

With 33:38 on the clock, Hobbton took over on offense, and the Wildcats were able to score with 24:50 on the clock after running back Henry Barnes completed a 5-yard pass.

Bunn took their last possession at 23 minutes, but were not able to get the ball into scoring position, leaving the touchdown tally 2-1, Hobbton.
