A standoff between sheriff’s deputies and a Sampson County man ended peacefully just before 9 p.m. Wednesday, four hours after the armed suspect barricaded himself inside a metal building behind his 409 Butler Island Road residence.

Sampson County Sheriff’s Capt. Eric Pope said the suspect, identified only as a 24-year-old male, was lured out of the building just before 9 p.m., and officers, hidden from view, were able to taser him, taking him into custody without incident.

Negotiations began shortly after the suspect barricaded himself inside the building and continued until officers were able to coax him from his self-inflicted prison.

The suspect was transported for mental evaluation, a determination which will precede any possible criminal charges.

“Once the mental evaluation is complete, we will assess potential criminal charges,” Pope said.

Because the case has been initially classified as a mental health case, the suspect’s name, Pope said, could not be released.

The incident began just before 5 p.m. Wednesday when officers were called to the Butler Island Road address, just outside the Roseboro town limits, in reference to a suspect threatening to kill himself.

Shots were exchanged between the man and deputies when they arrived at the scene.

According to Pope, the suspect was outside when deputies arrived and reportedly fired a weapon. “When officers went to confront him,” Pope said, “he pointed his gun at the officers and there was an exchange of gunfire.”

No one was injured in the short exchange.

As the suspect fired his weapon, believed to be a rifle, he ran into a metal building, barricading himself inside.

“We have him surrounded at this time,” Pope said just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, “and our tactical team is here. Negotiations are ongoing and have been since the incident began.”

In addition to sheriff’s officers, the N.C. Highway Patrol was on the scene as backup, with technical assistant from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department Cumberland. In addition, an officer with the License/Theft Bureau was also on hand to offer assistance.

This is obviously a "METH-HEAD" and if he would have wanted to kill hisself, then he would have!

When you want to kill yourself you either do it or you don't! He didn't,so that means he just wanted some attention from somebody, for some reason!? He needs to be charged with something.

So, this guy wanted to kill himself. The deputies show up and this mental midget decides to take a few shots at them. The he runs into a metal building barricades himself in.

Wow! This guy must have had a change of heart, huh? Sorry, no pity here for this loser. If he was a mental case, the family should have had him committed. If he was a junkie, so what? No one held him down a force that crap into him.

Natural selection, Darwin Award or whatever you want to call it, obviously he didn't make the cut.

Hopefully, the taser shocked his ass back in gear.

What if it was your family member?????

Does anyone ever stop to think like this anymore?? If more people thought "what if it was my family, or life, or ect...." I dont think we would have so many RUDE and SELFISH people in the world today.

But I guess no one thinks about others anymore! Everyone seems to only think of themselves these days!!!!!!!!!! SOOOOO SAD :(

I cant understand how people can be so cold hearted. Here is a person who is mentaly unstable. willing to take his life. and others find it funny or tend to joke about such an event! This IS a human, a living breathing human and to see that some think a situation such as this is Funny is sad. Realy shows the community's values and morals! Shame on those who mock a situation like this!!!!!!
