According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, Willie James Jr., pastor of the St. James Disciples of Christ Church, located on 2385 Delway Highway, Harrells, was slashed across his chest after investigating an incident that took place Saturday afternoon in the church’s parking lot.
Officials at the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said that children at the Family and Friends Day celebration notified the pastor that a man, who was alleged to be an ex-boyfriend of one of the parishioners, was out cutting the tires of one of the vehicles that was parked in the church parking lot at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
James, who was preparing food for the cookout for the celebration went to confront the man in the parking lot. When the pastor spoke, the man jumped up and slashed him across the chest with the knife.
The suspect, identified as William Henry Carr, Jr., 25, of 2438 Trinity Church Road, Rose Hill, was immediately arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
James was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. According to a spokesman at the hospital Monday afternoon, James was treated and released Sunday.
Carr, was given a $2,500 bond by Magistrate Jackie Dixon, and bonded out of jail within hours of the incident Saturday night.
He will have a trial date on Oct. 22.
