Sandy Norris, president of the Garland Rotary Club, said that she expects around 3,000 people to fill the streets of the southern Sampson town on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The day will start with a firemen competition at 9 a.m. This will involve firemen from around the state who will compete in different events, such as working with a fire hose.
At 9:30 a.m., the veterans of the area will be acknowledged through a memorial service.
Norris explained, “Saluting the military has always been a theme of our fair.” During the memorial service, different people will speak and honor the nation’s military forces and veterans.
In addition, there will be a parade for people to enjoy clowns, decorated floats, horses, beauty queens, old cars, etc. In fact, Norris is encouraging all area beauty queens and veterans to consider participating in this event.
Also, several vendors will be situated throughout the town who will be selling crafts, jewelry and other items that everyone might enjoy.
Throughout most of the afternoon, the Garland Fire Department will be selling barbecue plates, and a blue grass band will be playing at 4 p.m. to entertain any and all who attend.
However, the festivities do not end as the sun goes down that Saturday. That evening, the Rotary Club will hold a street dance with the Cape Fear River Band providing all of the music at 8 p.m.
And while all of this is intended for good old fashioned family entertainment, the funding helps the Garland Rotary Club as it will continue to provide scholarships and aid the town with projects and beautification.
According to Norris, the club has been instrumental in past years with the installation of a fountain in the middle of town.
The Garland Rotary Club also helps fund scholarships for students attending Union High School, Lakewood High School and East Bladen High Schools.
“We have students from Garland attending all three schools,” said Norris.
The group has also a local Girl Scout troop as well.
And town officials are quite excited with what the Garland Rotary Club has in store for the festivities.
“(The Garland Rotary Fair) is the biggest event that we have in town,” said town clerk Teresa Vault.
And, for those wanting to leave a lasting foot print on the town can be considered a sponsor by donating funds to the Rotary Club. By donating $100, their names will be published on a public wall in town along with other sponsors. Norris noted that the name will be left for at least two months.
