What started out as a benefit for the Warsaw Veterans Day Parade, has turned into a decade long event geared towards pride, honor and remembrance.

The General’s Cup, sponsored by the town of Warsaw and its Chamber of Commerce, was held on Oct. 7 as a fund-raising for the Warsaw Veterans Day Parade, a parade that is hailed by the title “Longest Continues Veterans Day Parade in America.”

According to officials with the General’s Cup, on Oct. 7, guest teams from the Coast Guard and the Navy were invited to play alongside the teams signed up for the event.

“This is a way to thank our heroes for all they do for us,” officials with the Cup commented after the event.

As for the winning teams, officials provided that Beulaville American Legion Post 511, with Gene Norris, Willie Miller, Dean Houston and Jerry Simpson, placed first.

Second place was awarded to the James Sprunt Community College team with Lawrence L. Rouse, Tom Fife, Jason Ginn and Melvin Vernon.

Stoppelbein & Hardison received third and BB&T placed fourth place in the Generals Cup.

Although the General’s Cup has only been around for a decade, it coincides with something much greater — the 89th Veterans Day Celebration.

“Warsaw’s 89th Veterans Day Celebration will be held this Nov. 7, and we invite all to participate in our celebration by taking part in the parade, being a vendor or coming and sharing our day,” officials said.

The parade this year is based on the theme “War on Terrorism: We will never forget our Marshals, Afghanistan Veterans and Iraq Veterans from Duplin County.”

The day will start at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Lodge; 9 a.m., the vendors will be open on Front Street; a memorial service will be at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Park; and the parade will start at 11 a.m.

At noon, there will be a barbecue lunch at the fire station and American Legion Post #227.

The Duplin County Veterans Museum will be open from 1 to 4 p.m., officials also provided.
