Janice Grady was recognized as she stepped down from the board, after having been a member since 1993. Mrs. Grady, a former Duplin County Teacher of the Year and school counselor, was recognized with a plaque by Albert Brown, board chairman.
Grady said her philosophy of education is that everyone, if given the chance, can succeed.
“I believe that everyone, given the appropriate opportunity at the appropriate time and place can develop into a productive citizen through education and training,” she remarked.
Among many other accomplishments, Grady is a past president of the Duplin County Arts Council, the Alpha Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Duplin County Association of Classroom Teachers. She is a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the N.C. Association of Educators.
She is also a member of the North Carolina Counselor’s Association, member of Delta Kappa Gama International Honorary Society for Women Educators, Parliamentarian for the Alpha Eta Chapter, elder of Pleasant View Presbyterian Church, a Sunday school teacher, vice-moderator of the Presbyterian Women and secretary of the Deep Run Alumni Association.
Grady is a graduate of Atlantic Christian College (Barton College), and received her Master’s of Education in guidance and counseling from Campbell University. She is married to Leonard Donald Grady and has one son.
Appointed by the Duplin County Board of Education to fill the vacancy left by Grady is Ken Kennedy, who will serve a four-year term. Kennnedy is a retired Duplin County school principal and resides in Chinquapin. He is married and has two daughters. Kennedy is a graduate of James Sprunt Community College and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He is a former principal of East Duplin High School.
Zettie Williams, who is appointed by the governor, and Duplin sheriff Blake Wallace, who is appointed by the Duplin County Board of Commissioners, were re-appointed to another four-year term. Williams, Kennedy, and Wallace were sworn in by Susan Kornegay, Duplin County assistant clerk of court.
