Sheriff Jimmy Thornton described the recent incident, reported shortly before 9:30 p.m. Friday, was not being near as serious, however the owner of the guns was cited and the firearms were immediately confiscated.
Christopher Moore, 18, of 5378 J.T. Matthews Road, Godwin, has been charged on citation with carrying a concealed weapon. Reports filed Wednesday state that a .32-caliber six-shot revolver was concealed under the driver’s seat.
The firearm was found following a search of Moore’s truck by deputies, who were alerted to the vehicle after finding another person, a juvenile, sitting in the vehicle smoking a cigarette, Thornton said. When deputies approached the vehicle in the school’s parking lot, they saw a .22-caliber single-shot rifle was “in plain view” and subsequently found the pistol.
Thornton said the juvenile was charged on petition with resisting, obstruct and delay of a law enforcement officer. Moore was cooperative, the sheriff noted.
“Based on what the detectives said, the guy was obviously legit as far as being a hunter,” Thornton remarked. “They really didn’t think that he was there for the intent or purpose to use those weapons, but (the deputy) thought the appropriate call was a carrying a concealed weapon charge, for the pistol under the seat.”
Thornton said it was the juvenile who drew attention to the vehicle.
“The gentleman with the gun was cooperative,” said the sheriff. “The juvenile created the problem.”
He pointed to the incident as being just a week removed from another during a Midway High School football game.
In that incident, on Oct. 23, a 16-year-old was arrested at Midway armed with a Hi-Point 9mm gun and a pocketful of drugs after security officials at the game spotted the weapon and discovered him in possession of prescription painkillers and anti-depressants.
In the incident this past weekend, both Moore and the juvenile were cited and released, the juvenile to his parents.
Guns at Royal Lane
Two people have been charged with trespassing, with one also receiving a weapons-related city ordinance violation, after two guns were found in the vehicle they occupied at Royal Lane Park.
Dwayne Waters, 33, of 102 W. Butler Ave., Clinton, and Rebecca Walker, 18, of 41 Golden Eagle Lane, Clinton, were each charged with trespassing. Waters was also charged with possession of a firearm in a city park, a misdemeanor ordinance violation.
According to police, two firearms were seized following a stop at 7:26 p.m. Saturday on Pierce Street. Waters’ 1995 Nissan Altima coupe was found to contain a .45-caliber Llama Minimax and a Mossberg .410. There was .45-caliber ammunition also seized, authorities said.
Both were written citations and released, according to Clinton police reports.
