After defeating Ayden-Grifton in the first round of the NCHSAA 1A playoffs, the Union Spartans will travel west Saturday, Nov. 7, to face Manteo. The final score Wednesday was 3-1.

“This was probably the best 80 minutes we’ve played this year,” said David Stanley, a pleased Spartan coach. “We had some defensive lapses that gave them their opportunity to score, but we made up for that one.”

Although Stanley had numerous players he wanted to highlight for their time on the field, he simply said, “Both the offense and the defense played well and were very synchronized.”

As for Union’s three goals, it would be Hairon “Jackie Chan” Sevilla; Irineo Rodriquez; and Luis Vargas to put them in the net. Josue Campos was also credited for an assist.

“We outshot them five to one, but only put three in the net,” Stanley commented, adding that finishing shots is a must come Saturday.

“We had some lapses in defense, and we have to fix that because it was those same lapses that got us in trouble in games that we should have won, but lost,” Stanley continued.

As for the game strategy, Stanley revealed that the Spartans will have to move the ball if they want to come out on top.
