This Saturday, my dad will be making his last trip of the season to Carter Finley Stadium in Raleigh to see the Wolfpack as they play their ultimate rival the Tarheels. I have ticket with my name on it, too, that is, if I’m willing to do the impossible — wear a red shirt.

You see, in the past, I have been allowed to go to several games with my parents as long as I disguised myself as an N.C. State fan. I guess they didn’t want to see me tarred and feathered at the stadium because I was not wearing the designated color of the day. However, every time I have been allowed to attend, they have always played another team with a similar red color. I was there when they lost to Maryland, and the first game I attended, they played the Louisville Cardinals. There always seems to be a sea of red when I go to the games.

None the less, they are letting me go if I am willing to hide my inner Tarheel and not root for the team that they predict will win. So, I will do what I normally do at games — I will sit there and pretend that I am interested. I will rise when the Wolfpack fight song is played and grind my teeth as it’s finished.

If I get bored knowing the team I am not allowed to root for is demolishing the Wolfpack, yet can’t root for, and I will just sit back and mess with my Blackberry, refusing to gloat. And if my dad should look over my shoulder and see that I am writing about it on Facebook, he will know that I am restraining myself and denying the Tarheel within me.

And as we leave the game, my dad will start talking about how this team let him down and how he should have sold his tickets to some Carolina fans. Instead, he was stuck having to spend quality time with his secretly defiant daughter.

But, he will know that he fulfilled his promise to me, and at least I will be happy, and that should make him happy as well. If not, there is always next season or the 100 more football games that will be on from now until New Year’day to reflect on.
