Gifts galore right here

I tried the Black Friday morning shopping one time, but that really isn’t for me. People are lined up, ready to hit the door running, gift lists in hand, grabbing those great deals. It’s worth it for fantastic savings, I’m sure; but I’m more the leisure shopper when it comes to Christmas gifts.

I may not be willing to get up that early, but I definitely look for bargains as I fill my Christmas gift list. And more importantly, and especially this year, shopping here at home is crucial. Money spent here will stay here. It stays here to help our schools when cheerleaders are raising money for camp. It stays here when Cub Scouts are selling popcorn to raise money. And it stays here in our churches, our schools and our recreation departments. It stays here to help pay for groceries each week and it stays here to help keep the lights on. That’s enough reason right there to make the extra effort to find your gifts right here at home.

If you and your siblings are going in together this year to help mom and dad, visit Owens Furnishings or Clinton Appliance. Buy a bedroom suit and get a 32-inch HD TV free. You may have to flip a coin on who gets the TV, but it’s a great way to surprise mom and dad. Showrooms Furniture always has great buys on recliners and Taylor and Sanderson’s appliances are top notch. All great gifts if you are combining efforts with others in the family to give a big gift this year. Or maybe you would like to give a gift that they wouldn’t buy for themselves. Hardwood floors from Edward’s Carpet, or carpet from Dudley’s would be a great gift. And there’s no bigger surprise than a big red bow on a shiny new car in the driveway.

Maybe you have several people on your gift list and one big item isn’t the route you are going this year. We buy for mostly boys in our family, so it’s usually sports items; but if you have ladies on your gift list, a trip to Butler’s Gifts is always fun. Vera Bradley designs are exciting, and the Vera Bradley Apron Gift Box Set is a great gift this year. You can always add to someone’s Pandora charms collection too! At Matthews Gifts, their hot item is the Mishi bag system. Begin with the basic starter bag and then add interchangeable covers for lots of new designs. Their collectable items are always keepers too. I make sure my husband remembers to take a look at their Wizard of Oz items, hint, hint. Oh, and Chamilia jewelry at Baggett’s Jewelry is a great way to mark special occasions with specific beads. Sessoms Jewelry… and beautiful clocks… and shiny bright bracelets… sure to bring smiles for Christmas. And there’s Tickled Pink and their JS Collection earrings and Department 57 Christmas Villages.

Truly, you can buy it all right here at home. Buying for the guys? Of course electronics are always a hot item and our furniture stores have them. Looking for small gifts? Taylor & Sanderson offers Monster Screen Cleaners for televisions and surge protectors are great stocking stuffers. Mar-Cel’s ATV oil change kits and goggles also make Santa’s job easy when stuffing stockings by the chimney this year. Mike’s Hunting Shop has several accessory items under $30, and great gifts for the guys on your list. Matthew’s Gifts College Corner is a hit with most guys too.

Maybe you are looking for the gift that others don’t think of. How about a tanning package from Heat Wave Salon, or gift baskets filled with hair products. One of my grandmother’s favorite gifts came from my great aunt. She bought a year’s worth of hair appointments for my grandmother. She made arrangements with Grandma’s hairdresser and she was set for the entire year, an appointment every Thursday afternoon. Or maybe you want to pick up a pre-made dinner from Piggly Wiggly to deliver to a loved one. The Pig, and Food Lion both offer gift certificates too.

Still can’t think of anything to buy? If you are completely out of ideas, why not help a local charity in the name of your relative. U-Care Reverse Drawing tickets went on sale this week. If you want to give a gift, and help those who face domestic violence, this is the perfect item. Your ticket is good for a prime rib dinner for two, and a chance to win $5,000 on Feb. 12, 2010. Stop by The Sampson Independent office to buy a ticket before Christmas. And of course, when you stop by you can always pick up a gift subscription for someone.

T’was a month before Christmas, and all through the town… gifts for everyone, young and old, could be found. The stockings were hung, by the chimney with care… filled to the brim with gifts Sampson shares.

Now Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, Roses and Big Blue; all ready with sales items for which you can choose. On to Clinton Drug, Horne’s Furniture, Danielle’s and James Trading too; there are gifts for everyone, bright shiny and new.

Happy shopping; and remember, shop at home this Christmas. It really matters.
