“We played unbelievable defense for the full 32 minutes,” said coach Kenny Bass post game. “Our defensive intensity was as good for a full game as any team I have ever coached.”
Bass said the efforts from Malcolm Swinson, a senior who has never played before this season, were newsworthy, with nine rebounds for the Wildcats.
Mallard Newkirk, Joe Schoonmaker and Xavier Thompson led the Wildcat offensive efforts, Bass followed.
Although these players were a key to the victory Thursday, Bass added that the triumph was a total team effort with 11 players playing extremely hard and extremely well.
“I could not be any happier with our team effort tonight. To come back and play this well after playing so poorly against Clinton on Tuesday night speaks well about the character of our kids,” Bass commented.
As for the game, Hobbton would take a one point lead at the end of the first quarter and turn it into a three point advantage by the half. The score was 23-20.
In the third and fourth quarters, Hobbton would bucket 18 and 26 points, respectively, to give them a 67-point finish.
North Duplin, on the other hand, would lag with 13 points in each of the final two quarters to finish with 46 points.
Leading players for Hobbton were Newkirk with 17 points; Schoonmaker with 15; Thompson with 13; Brad Evans with nine; Justin Armwood with six; Ira Moore with three; Kevin Oates with two; and Swinson with two points.
North Duplin’s James Kornegay put up 11 points; Marcus Kornegay and Alan Schilling, both had 10 points; Jimmy Smith followed with eight; Justin Carr had three; Cliff Warren with two; Devin Oliver put up one; and Caleb Warren with two points.
After taking in the win Thursday, the Wildcats have started to look towards the future, starting with preparation for next week’s match against season-opening foe, Clinton.
“We should get two football players back that have been out with injuries. That should help us continue to improve,” Bass concluded.
