On Saturday, March 13, 2010, Sampson County will embark on a monumental moment and hold its first triathlon. Like many other firsts in Sampson County, I anticipate this event to be a huge success. The successes will come in many forms for many different people. For me, it will be to reach the finish line in a two-hour time frame. This task will not be easy but I, along with other triathlon first timers, will be ready.

While contemplating this extraordinary opportunity, I began to do my own SWOT Analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats) on myself. This is so hard, but it is a task that will benefit me, and I hope others reading this article. Let me begin by saying that I am not the healthiest person in the world and know absolutely nothing about triathlons; however, I am a firm believer that you must mentally prepare yourself for success in all aspects of your life, including triathlons!

So here it goes.

Goals: To enter, train and complete the Sampson County Super Sprint. Another goal is to finish the race in one piece. These two goals are realistic for me.

Strengths: I was once a dedicated runner and have the overall desire to succeed at this personal goal. My strengths will serve as my blueprints and where I will begin my training.

Weaknesses: I am a horrible swimmer. I did not learn to swim until I was in my teens. I am quite intimidated by this first section of the race. This will take practice, practice, practice. Our state-of-the-art Center for Health and Wellness plans to hold practice sessions, but I will need much more and plan on joining the Wellness Center this week.

Opportunities: This triathlon will offer me the opportunity to get back in shape and to hopefully remain physically active. Another opportunity I see is being a positive role model for my two boys.

Threats: My only threat is myself. This is a personal decision that will demand a personal result for me.

Finally, devise my training schedule and stick to it. Super simple and self-explanatory.

Wow, I am actually very excited and have pumped myself up. For those of you who need a little extra push to take this life altering plunge I advise you to talk to Ali Noll or Sarah Olgesby. They are both trialthletes and will give you the best advise you could ask for. They will also be your biggest cheerleaders.

I hope that I see many of your excited, anxious, happy, nervous and proud selves on Saturday, March 13!

For more information on the Sampson County Super Sprint, please contact Ali Noll at 592-9399 or Sarah Olgesby at 990-5643 or the Wellness Center at 596-5400.
