Stepping into their first conference game this season, Midway took on their neighboring foe Hobbton Tuesday, and after a neck-and-neck game, the lady Raiders would pull ahead in the fourth quarter, taking the win 51-35.

Despite the loss, Hobbton’s girls would be the first to get on the board Tuesday, but Midway would find themselves scoring shortly after when Amber Peterson drained one of her free throw attempts.

A two from Peterson moments later allowed the Raiders to close the game to a 3-all tie, but a steal and layup from Hobbton would take the Wildcats back into the lead with just over 3 minutes remaining in the quarter.

Hobbton would put an additional six points on the board, holding the lead 11-3.

Midway would rally at the start of the second quarter, taking their score up four while holding Hobbton at 11 points.

Just past the quarter’s halfway mark, Peterson would take it to a two-point game and heat the competition up.

Before the quarter’s end, Midway would capture the lead from Hobbton with point contributions from Kacey Wrench, Jada Cannady and Tess Williams; however, with just 47 ticks left, Hobbton would tie the game again after they put up another four points.

The Wildcats would reclaim their spot on top after Annarose Schoonmaker repeated a play that took the girls over North Duplin Friday. Schoonmaker’s last second three-point shot, from the top of the key, put Hobbton up 19-18 at the half.

Trailing by a scant one point at the start of the third quarter, Midway would hit the court strong, retaking the top position only to give it right back to Hobbton moments later.

The quarter would remain point-for-point until Midway once again took control of the board for a 29-26 advance going into the fourth quarter.

Still any team’s game, Midway would pull ahead in the final stretch for the win 51-35.

Leaders for Midway were Wrench with 10 points, 4 assists and 4 steals; Morgan Warren with 9 points; Peterson with 9 points and 17 rebounds; Cannady with 6 points and 6 rebounds; and Williams with 4 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Hobbton’s top players were Schoonmaker with 12 points; Niesha Lewis with 9 points; Bethany Knight with 6 points and 9 rebounds; Michaela Wilson with 4 points; Samantha Wilson with 3 points; and Daja Barksdale with 2 points.
