A 22-year-old Clinton woman was arrested for assaulting a handicapped person on the same night and at the same address where another incident took place involving the beating of a 10-year-old child.

Alyssa Nicole Bowden, 22, of 3683 Basstown Road, Clinton, was charged Wednesday with assault/battery on a handicapped person. Bowden turned herself in at the Sampson County Detention Center Wednesday. She was given a $500 unsecured bond and released. Her court appearance was set for Jan. 5.

The warrant for Bowden was taken out on Dec. 14, two days after the alleged incident took place. According to the warrant, the incident involved Bowden pushing a handicapped woman to the floor.

Coincidentally, the incident took place on Dec. 12 — the same day and at the same residence that a 10-year-old was allegedly punched multiple times in both arms and hit with a bathroom door several times.

Lawrence Bowden, 53, of Keener Road, Clinton, was charged with assault on a child under 12 Saturday night, Dec. 12, around 9 p.m. Bowden was taken into custody and placed under a $10,000 bond and given a trial date of Jan. 5 by Magistrate C. Price. He bonded out the next day.

The charges leveled against Alyssa Bowden were not investigated by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, they only served the warrant against her. The handicapped woman went to the magistrate’s office on Monday and lodged the complaint.

It was not clear of her relationship with Lawrence Bowden, and what she was doing at the residence that night. However, Lawrence Bowden could be facing additional charges by authorities once an investigation by the Department of Social Services and the Sampson County Sheriff’s office are complete.

Seems like the Bowdens has some anger management issues. However, I wouldn't call the family dysfunctional, stupid, yes, but not dysfunctional. And for God's sake, stop blaming Christmas for the actions of these morons.

First of all "thrasher3" in your earlier post you stated "its not your place to call them dysfunctional." Well, in the last post you made you said, "MAYBE if you spent more time helping distressed and *dysfunctional families than analyzing their situation afterwards these events could be avoided." How can you say they're NOT dysfunctional, then call them dysfunctional? I know PLENTY of people who have PLENTY of stress on them, and they dont "snap", and if you sat idly by while "trouble was brewing" (since you saw something like this happening) why didnt YOU do something?

Youre right there is NO excuse for a 22 year old to hit a handicapped person... Then when the ten year old calls 911, the father-in-law of the 22 year old beats the girl... There is absolutely no excuse.... I agree 110%... Nowhere in this article or the last did it say which eventhappened first... SO, but this hasnt been brewing for just a few days.... I am not making excuses for ANYONE whats wrong is wrong... BUT I AM saying that one person cant take but so much before something makes them snap. BUT, now that its in the paper everyone is jumping to my Dr. Phil and make their assumptions. MAYBE if you spent more time helping distressed and dysfunctional families than analyzing their situation afterwards these events could be avoided.... THATS ALL I AM SAYING.... EVERYONE knows the statistics that violent crimes, senseless crimes, suicide, and robberies increase this time of year.... Not to mention the pressure-cooker effect of the economy on these already volitle situations.

You are right "thrasher3"...we don't know the situation. But there is apparently a problem...you have not one but TWO household members who are charged with some sort of abuse. Holidays are now an EXCUSE for what happened?? Well if that's the case, don't feel bad if I knock someone's 79 year old grandma over with my buggy in the Walmart cause she is in my way!! Yea...sounds ridiculous, doesn't it? There is NO REASON to hurt a child, a handicapped person or an elderly person. I hope the Sampson Independent will report on this story when the individuals go to court

" People have problems... ESPECIALLY, this time of year "

@ thrasher3- so in other words, the events that have taken place over the last few days in the Bowden cave is o.k. as long as they have problems?

Note- I said Bowden cave, because animals like this don't make a home...

So what's happened here? It's the holiday season,(reference to thrasher's excuse: "especially this time of year" )- money is tight, Larry's had one too many Budweisers and decides that he needs to prove his power & masculinity by hurting an innocent 10 year old little girl, Alyssa calls the cops, all the while, she's proving her power and ignorance to a handicapped person who is on the receiving end of her fists... but, hell, it's Christmas time, we'd better get all the slapping around done before the new year....!!

STAND UP AND POP YOUR HEAD OUT THRASHER3, STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR THESE PIECES OF CRAP!

You are correct "thrasher3", I do not know the entire situation.

However, this is what I DO know:

1.) violence never solves a problem

2.) a grown man should never hit a 10-yr-old with his fists, nor hit her with a bathroom door.

3.) handicapped persons should never be pushed to the floor.

I beg to differ with you: whenever children and handicapped people are being physically attacked, it definitely IS my place to speak up on behalf of those who've been victimized.

Calling attention to the (apparent) dysfunctional household may, in some small way, focus attention on the perpetrators and possibly prevent recurring violence-especially if they know they are under scrutiny.

Bless the handicapped and the little children-ESPECIALLY at this time of year

Based upon these recent reports, the Bowden household seems dysfunctional, with accompanying violence. Please say a prayer for the children involved in this unfortunate situation.
