KENANSVILLE — A Duplin County traffic stop has put two suspected drug dealers behind bars on trafficking charges and taken some 15 pounds of marijuana off the streets.
That’s was the word from Sheriff Blake Wallace late last week as he talked about a routine traffic stop in Rose Hill turned up over a dozen pounds of pot and a .357-caliber handgun.
Wallace and Lt. Chris Smith showed off the seizure at a press conference Thursday.
“Lt. Smith pulled over a 2002 Nissan Altima on Dec. 28, just outside of Rose Hill for a lane violation and a tinted window violation,” Wallace explained. “When he got to the window, he smelled a strong odor of marijuana.”
After a search of the vehicle, investigators turned up the marijuana. Wallace said the street value of the drugs was in excess of $25,000.
The driver of the vehicle, Ronald Godoy, of 1930 Willard Railroad St., Wallace, and the passenger, Pedro Roman Cruz, of 130 West Ridge St., Wallace, were taken into custody.
Godoy was charged with three counts of trafficking in marijuana; conspiring to traffic in marijuana; maintaining a vehicle/dwelling/place for a controlled substance; possession of a stolen firearm; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver marijuana; felony possession of marijuana; manufacturing marijuana; possession of stolen goods; resisting a pubic officer; and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Godoy was given a $250,000 bond and a trail date of Jan. 15.
Cruz was charged with three counts of trafficking in marijuana; conspiring to traffic in marijuana; possession of a stolen firearm; possession of stolen goods; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver marijuana; felony possession of marijuana; manufacturing marijuana; possession of a firearm by a felon; resisting pubic officer; and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Cruz was given a $100,000 bond and a trial date of Jan. 15.
“This is a good stop,” said Wallace. “These are drugs that are not going to get in the hands of our children, and that is a good thing.”
