A Roseboro man was placed under a $100,000 secured bond Tuesday afternoon, charged after being the prime suspect in the beating of a sleeping man.
Billy Ray Thompson, of Sir Lane, Roseboro, was arrested Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. at his place of employment in Clinton and charged with first degree burglary and assault with intent to inflict serious injury.
According to reports from the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, Thompson and two additional suspects allegedly broke into the Roseboro residence of Johnny Pope. As Pope slept on the couch, the three men allegedly took a small amount of cash. Before they left, Thompson allegedly physically assaulted Pope as he lay sleeping.

Thompson was arrested Tuesday afternoon. His trial date is Feb. 5.
The two other suspects involved are still being sought by law enforcement officials.
According to the North Carolina Department of Corrections website, Thompson has a list of convictions dating back to 1998, including misdemeanor breaking and entering (1998); larceny (2003); and two misdemeanors for a DWI and driving with license revoked (Jan. 9, 2009).
