ROSEBORO — Ms. Annie Grace Greene Mixon, 60, of 611 Mill Creek Church Road, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Rex Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Rex.

Ruby S. Herring, 85

JOHNSTON COUNTY — Mrs. Ruby Mae Stephenson Herring, 85, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, at New Zealand PFWB Church, Benson, with the Rev. William H. Johnson, the Rev. Jeff Hayes, the Rev. Ronnie Jones and the Rev. Virgil Murphy officiating. Interment will be in the Unity Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Newton Grove.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, and at other times at the home of Danny Herring and Janet Hardee of Newton Grove.

Harold G. Pope, 64

AUTRYVILLE — Mr. Harold Gilbert Pope, 64, of 151 Aunt Janie Lane, passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at the VA Medical Center.

Mr. Pope was born Dec. 6, 1945, in Sampson County, to the late George W. Goodrich and Gaynell Pope. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy L. Pope.

Leaving to cherish his memories are a companion, Edith Underwood of Autryville; a daughter, Lisa Lewis and husband Steve of Star; a son, William H. Pope and wife, Kim of Hamlet, N.C.; a sister, Tricia Pulliam and husband, Jimmy, of Garner; two brothers, Wayne Pope and wife, Kathy, of Effland, N.C., and Doug Mazingo and wife, Lorie, of Winston Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren; Taylor, Daniel, Corey, Nicholas and Hailey; one great-grandson, Gavin.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., tonight, Feb. 2, at Rogers & Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville.

A graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Harnett Memorial Park in Lillington, N.C.

Carolyn F. Moore, 69

DURHAM — Mrs. Carolyn Faye Moore, 69, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010.

Mrs. Moore was born in Sampson County on May 28, 1940, to the late Jimmy Minson Holland and Rachel Hollingsworth Holland. She was a member of Grove Park Chapel. Mrs. Moore was a retired school teacher. She was a loving wife, mother and ne-ne.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Charlie Moore; son, Charles E. “Chuck” Moore III of Durham; daughter, Lisa Moore Rakouskas and husband, Mike, of Durham; two grandchildren, Marlee Rakouskas and Ryan Rakouskas; four sister-in-laws and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Zoar Free Will Baptist Church on Zoar Church Road in Salemburg, with the Rev. Curtiss Tatum and the Rev. Randy Barker officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton City Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home, 211 S. Miami Blvd., Durham.

Larry D. Barefoot, 54

HAMPTON, VA. — Mr. Larry D. Barefoot, 54, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010. A native of Dunn, he went to work as a paid firefighter for the city of Hampton, retiring in 2005 after 27 years of service.

He loved cooking on the grill and hunting and fishing with his son, Jay, who was the light of his life.

Survivors include his wife, Betty “Bo” Barefoot; his son and daughter-in-law, Joseph “Jay” and Stephany Barefoot; his daughter, Crystal Hunt; his parents, Alice and Dwight Barefoot; his sister, Wanda Cole and her husband, Ronnie; his brother, Mickey Barefoot; and two grandchildren, Katlyn and Jason Hunt.

A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel, Hampton, by pastor Don Blagg. The family will receive friends immediately preceding the funeral beginning at 5 p.m.

Almeta N. Bass, 94

PLAINVIEW COMMUNITY — Mrs. Almeta Naylor Bass, died Sunday, Jan. 31, at Autumn Winds Assisted Living Center in Roseboro.

Mrs. Bass was a native of Sampson County. She was the daughter of the late Brady and Bessie Jackson Naylor. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. C. Bass; one brother, Norman Naylor; two sisters, Lillian McLamb and Daisy Parker; and a niece, Carol Jean Cannady.

A funeral will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3, 3 p.m., at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home by the Rev. Andy Wood. Burial will follow in Lee’s Chapel-Williford Cemetery.

Mrs. Bass is survived by one niece, Rosita West of Clinton; two nephews, Norman Wayne Naylor and wife, Norma, of Clinton and Brady Parker and wife, Ann, of Salemburg; and many great nieces and nephews.

CLINTON — Mr. Roger David Nelson Jr., 57, of 307 Hanson Road, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010. He was born in Florida and was the son of the late Roger Allen Nelson and Sallie Katherine Weeks Nelson Dillon.

He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Floyd Dillon.

No services are planned.

Survivors are two brothers, Chris Nelson of Clinton and Samuel Nelson of Wallace; three sisters, Kimberly Lambert of Hampstead, Cynthia Nelson and Denise Edwards, both of California.

James M. Harris, 80

WARSAW —Mr. James Melvin Harris, 80, passed away Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harris was born Dec. 30, 1929 in Sampson County to the late Isham Alvin and Gladys King Harris.

A visitation will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Warsaw Baptist Church. The funeral will be held Wednesday, Feb. 3, 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow in Devotional Gardens of Warsaw.

Mr. Harris is survived by son, Christopher Harris and wife, Stephanie, of Kenansville; daughters, Darlene Guise and husband, George, of Pearson Ga., Vivian Harris of Kenansville; brothers, Roy Harris and wife, Gwen, of Garner, Danny Harris of Clinton; sister Julia Raynor and husband, Bob, of Raleigh; sisters-in-law, Mae Harris of Roseboro and Henrietta Kirby and husband, Gene, of Clinton; grandchildren, Jamie Bowles and husband, Chris, of Warsaw, Michael Harris of Kenansville and Brandon Harris of Wilmington; great-grandchildren, Chloe Bowles and Bailey Bowles, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Faye Bradshaw Harris and brother Alvin Harris Jr.

GOLDSBORO — Mr. Joseph Grady Sr., 89, formerly of Goldsboro, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Sampson Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Anson A. and Sallie Lewis Grady.

Services will be held 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Muston officiating. Committal will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, Feb. 2, from 7-9 p.m., at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
