This weather pattern is offering us heavy rain totals and possibly some snow in the northern part of the state. Of course, if it does rain all weekend that will certainly put a damper on any outdoor activities you may have planned.
So, what in the world can an outdoor junkie do with a rainy weekend? How about reading a good book? I know, not nearly as much fun as fishing, hunting, hiking or camping, but the right book could save the weekend from in-house misery.
Years ago, my hunting partner, Kent, let me borrow a “survivalist” book that was exceptional; so good that I actually read it twice. The book offered ideas and solutions to just about every outdoor scenario you could come across if you were stranded in the wild. Since that reading, I’ve embarked on a relentless journey to find and read every survival type book available. I must say it was time well spent!
One of the best I’ve read is by National Geographic and titled, “The Complete Survival Manual.” This book offers “expert tips from four well-renowed organizations plus survival stories of National Geographic explorers”. Not only is it well written and packed with illustrations and tips, but it also covers every climate and terrain on earth!
I would deem this a must read for any outdoorsman, and is the type of book that I actually kept in my backpack during hunting season ... it’s that good.
If reading is not your thing, the good old television offers two “survival” shows; Survivor Man and Man vs. Wild. If you are stuck in the house this weekend and looking for an outdoor fix, give the book or the show a shot!
